Karnataka Election Results 2023: As Congress celebrates win, Siddaramaiah bats for Rahul Gandhi as PM

Describing the results of the Karnataka Assembly polls as a mandate against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Siddaramaiah said that would act as a ‘stepping stone’ to the Lok Sabha election slated for next year.

The Congress returned triumphantly to power in the Karnataka Assembly on Saturday, securing an absolute majority. Congress leader Siddaramaiah - a top contender for the chief ministerial post according to many - however sees this as just the beginning. Even as party leaders exulted and celebrations broke out across Congress headquarters the senior politician voice hope that Rahul Gandhi would become the Prime Minister in 2024.

"The result of this election is a stepping stone to the Lok Sabha election. I hope all non-BJP parties come together and see that BJP is defeated and I also hope Rahul Gandhi may become PM of the country," Siddaramaiah said.

Celebrations broke out early at Congress headquarters as Election Commission trends indicated a landslide win for the beleagured Opposition party. The Congress secured 136 seats while the BJP saw its performance drop significantly - from 104 to 65.

Siddaramaiah asserted on Saturday that the result would act as a “mandate against Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and JP Nadda". The senior leader who had previously indicated that this would be his ‘last election’ is one of the top contenders for the Chief Ministerial post.

"The PM had come to Karnataka 20 times, no PM in the past campaigned like this…This is a victory for a secular party. People of Karnataka wanted a stable government that delivers as promised, and hence have given the mandate for Congress," he added.
