The United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Indian National Congress, on Thursday, 2 April, released its manifesto for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections scheduled for 9 April. The document outlines a range of welfare- and development-focused promises aimed at key sections of society.

Congress leader V D Satheesan said the manifesto proposes a 25 lakh insurance cover for every family in Kerala. He added that small businesses would be supported through loans of up to 5 lakh.

The manifesto places a strong emphasis on social security measures, including free travel for women on all Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses. It also promises to increase welfare pensions to 3,000 per month. In addition, college-going girls would receive a monthly allowance of 1,000 to support their education, according to PTI.

Economic support and overall growth take centre stage

The UDF has proposed a comprehensive 25 lakh insurance scheme for every household to provide a financial safety net. Small businesses are expected to benefit from interest-free loans of up to 5 lakh, aimed at boosting entrepreneurship and local economic activity.

The manifesto also highlights plans to extend financial support to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with an annual turnover of up to 100 crore.

The alliance has further committed to revising wages for scheme workers, including ASHA and Anganwadi staff, acknowledging their critical role in social development.

Infrastructure and sectoral development in focus

Alongside welfare measures, the UDF has outlined plans to strengthen the state’s economy by focusing on the aviation sector. It has also proposed setting up a tribal university in Wayanad, with an emphasis on inclusivity and long-term development.

Strengthening Education, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainability

The UDF manifesto therefore holistically emphasises education, skill development, and entrepreneurship. This will be accomplished through digital learning initiatives, vocational programs and support for new and emerging businesses.

Sustainable agriculture, eco-friendly tourism, and cultural preservation will also be worked upon. The manifesto aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices and to protect Kerala's forests, economy, and biodiversity.

Social welfare, education and ecological planning are also at the fulcrum of the manifesto. This way, UDF aims to position itself constructively and lay down a comprehensive plan developed to foster overall growth and prosperity.
