Shinde resigned as Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday, days after Mahayuti's historic victory in the Maharashtra Assembly Elections. The term of the current assembly ended todau, November 26.
Shinde will serve as caretaker CM of the new Mahayuti-led government.
Shinde has handed his resignation to Governor Radhakrishnan at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. He was accompanied by deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.
However, the suspense around who will take over as the next chief minister contines. Will it be BJP's Devendra Fadnavis or Eknath Shinde will continue?
Many BJP leaders have extended their support for Fadnavis for the record performance of the saffron party. Shinde's supporters have started thronging his official residence, ‘Varsha,’ to pitch for his continuation in the top post.
The announcement of the next chief minister of Maharashtra is delayed after the Mahayuti stormed to power in the assembly elections.

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance scripted a powerful comeback in state assembly elections by winning 230 seats in the 288-member house. Recovering from its Lok Sabha Elections 2024 losses, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 132 constituencies, highest among all constituents of Mahayuti. Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP also performed well. Sena won 57 while NCP won 41 seats.
Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a setback. The grand old party registered one of its worst performances in the state assembly polls after it won only 16 seats. Sharad Pawar's NCP(SCP) won just 10 seats, whereas Uddhav Thackeray's (UBT) won only 20 seats.
The BJP, which led the Mahayuti's return by securing record 132 of its 235 seats, has so far maintained silence. But the saffron party is reportedly under pressure from its MLAs, who want the chief minister to be from the party. Many MLAs are learnt to have suggested the name of Devendra Fadnavis, currently the Deputy Chief Minister, for the top post.
The MLA's in Eknath Shinde camp hope incumbent CM continues as it was under his leadership that Mahayuti won the assembly elections. The Maharashtra assembly elections were held on November 20, and the results were declared on November 23.

Eknath Shinde Press Conference Live: Amid suspense over the choice of the next Maharashtra Chief Minister, NCP chief Ajit Pawar said on Wednesday that discussions over government formation will take place in the national capital tomorrow and a final decision will be taken.
Ajit Pawar said he, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will reach Delhi tomorrow and further discussions will be held.
He said discussions will be held for the post of Chief Minister and two Deputy Chief Ministers.
"All three of us (Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar) are coming to Delhi tomorrow. Further discussions will be held there. Discussions on the formation of the government with a CM and two deputy CMs will be held," Pawar, a former Deputy Chief Minister was quoted by news agency ANI.

Maharashtra CM LIVE Updates: NCP-SP leader Clyde Crasto on Wednesday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly using Eknath Shinde as a tool to secure electoral victories in Maharashtra. Speaking to ANI, Crasto questioned the BJP's intentions, pointing out the contradiction between the party's claim of fielding Shinde as the face of the Mahayuti alliance during the election and its hesitance to appoint him as Chief Minister now.
He accused the BJP of undermining Shinde, suggesting that the party used him to achieve its goals and now sought to replace him. Crasto called this move an injustice to Shinde, urging the BJP to honour the people's mandate and appoint a Chief Minister who will lead Maharashtra to prosperity.

Maharashtra CM LIVE Updates: As many as 94 candidates, out of 106 in the fray in half a dozen assembly seats in Maharashtra's Latur district, have lost their security deposits in the just-concluded polls, meaning they bagged less than one-sixth of the total valid votes, as per an analysis of post-result data. Interestingly, some of these candidates failed to secure even a 100 votes, the data revealed.

The 80-year-old leader — popularly known as Adam master — said he would continue to work for labourers. He has blamed EVMs after losing the contest by a huge margin of 48,850 votes against BJP candidate Devendra Kothe.
"I am 80 now. I have not announced retirement from politics but I have decided that I will not take part in electoral politics and will not contest any election," Adam told reporters

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday paid floral tributes to the bravehearts at the Martyrs Memorial in Mumbai on the 16th anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar and state's governor C P Radhakrishnan also paid tributes at the Martyrs' Memorial on the premises of the Commissioner's Office today.
Notably, at least 174 people, including 20 security force personnel and 26 foreigners, were killed and more than 300 injured in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.
