Mizoram Election Results 2023 Highlights: Lalduhoma, the man who guarded Indira Gandhi, set to be CM

The Election Commission of India on Monday, 4 December conducted the vote counting for the Mizoram Assembly Elections 2023. In some alteration in political scenario, the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) bagged victory in 27 seats, usurping the incumbent Zoramthanga-led Mizo National Front (MNF). 

Further Mizo National Front won 10 seats and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) won 2. 

Congress won one seat in the Mizoram Assembly Elections.

ZPM leader Lalduhoma, a former IPS officer who also guarded former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is set to become the new Chief Minister of Mizoram.

ZPM working president K Sapdanga said the meeting will be held on Tuesday and party leader Lalduhoma, who was in Serchhip, was travelling to Aizawl on Monday to meet the newly elected MLAs.

ZPM, the opposition party, swept the polls, winning 27 of the 40 seats, while the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, bagged 10 seats and was leading in one.

Would-be Chief Minister of Mizoram, ZPM leader Lalduhoma, shared an update with Hindustan times on the swearing-in ceremony of the news government. “We are likely to stake claim to form the government on Wednesday and the swearing-in can be expected either on Thursday or Friday” the ZPM leader said. 

Lalduhoma, 74, who is set to become the next chief minister, told Hindustan Times about the priorities of his government. 

They are 

-Procure ginger, turmeric, chili, and broomsticks at a minimum pre-determined price to support farmers

-Constitute an expert committee and put fiscal reforms in place

-Adopt a policy of zero tolerance for corruption 

-Grant permission to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) to act on corruption

While some news media houses had predicted a clean sweep by the ZPM, majority had predicted a hung assembly, thereby failing to predict the outcome that the Mizoram Assembly election Results have shown on 4 December. 

In the last assembly elections, held in 2018, the MNF had won 26 seats and the ZPM secured eight seats.

The MNF, ZPM and Congress contested 40 seats each, while the BJP fielded candidates in 23 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which contested the assembly polls here for the first time, fought in four seats. Also, there were 17 Independent candidates.

The MNF won in Hachhek, Mamik, Tuirial, Serlui, Tuivawl, East Tuipui, West Tuipui, Thorang and Tuichawng seats and was leading in one.

Counting of votes, which began at 8 am, was being held in 13 centres. Postal ballots were counted first, and from 8.30 am, the counting for votes polled in the EVMs began.

In some of the seats that have a fewer number of voters, only two rounds of counting will be held, but in most of the constituencies, five rounds will be counted.

More than 4,000 personnel are involved in the counting process. In all, there are 399 tables for the EVMs and 56 for the counting of postal ballots.

ZPM emerged winners in Kolasib, Chalfilh, Tawi, Aizawl North-I, Aizawl North-II, Aizawl North-III, Aizawl East I, Aizawl East II, Aizawl West-I, Aizawl West-II, Aizawl West-III, Aizawl South-I, Aizawl South-II, Aizawl South-III, Lengteng, Tuichang, Champhai North, Champai South, Tuikum, Hrangturzo, South Tuipui, Lunglei North, Lunglei East, Lunglei West, Lunglei South, Lawngtlai East and Serchhip seats.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga called on Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Monday evening and submitted his resignation following the debacle of his party, the Mizo National Front, in the assembly elections, officials said.

The MNF has won nine seats and is leading in one, while the opposition Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) secured majority by bagging 27 seats in the 40-member House.

Zoramthanga himself also lost to ZPM's Lalthansanga by 2,101 votes in the Aizawl East-1 seat, according to the Election Commission.

The ruling Mizo National Front won nine seats and was leading in one.

The BJP won the Palak and Saiha seats.

The Indian National Congress bagged the Lawngtlai West seat.

Prominent losers include Deputy Chief Minister and MNF candidate Tawnluia who lost to ZPM candidate in Tuichang, Health Minister and MNF candidate R Lalthangliana who lost to ZPM's Jeje Lalpekhlua in South Tuipui and Rural Development Minister Laruatkima who lost to ZPM nominee Lalnghinglova Hmar in Aizawl West II, according to the Election Commission.

From earning the dubious distinction of the first MP to be disqualified under the anti-defection law to being all set to becoming the chief minister of Mizoram, 73-year-old Lalduhoma’s political journey has been all about battling against odds.

Lalduhoma, an ex-IPS officer who served as the in-charge of former prime minister Indira Gandhi’s security, is the chief ministerial face of the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM).

Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) will hold a meeting of its newly elected MLAs to decide on claiming a stake in government formation in Mizoram, a senior leader said.

ZPM leader Lalduhoma, who was in Serchhip, was on Monday afternoon travelling to Aizawl to meet the newly elected MLAs of the party, he said.

"A meeting of newly elected MLAs and Val Upa Council, the decision-making body of the party, will be held most likely on Tuesday to decide on claiming stake to form the government in Mizoram," ZPM working president K Sapdanga told PTI.

Lalduhoma, the Chief Ministerial candidate of the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), has secured a clear victory in the Serchhip Assembly constituency of Mizoram as the Election Commission of India declared results for 25 seats of the polls that were held in the state on November 7.

Lalduhoma has registered a decisive win in the Serchhip constituency, defeating Mizo National Front candidate J Malsawmzuala Vanchhawng by 2982 votes, data from the Election Commission of India showed.

Four major contenders were in fray in the northeastern state, which voted to elect its 40-member legislative assembly on November 7. These include the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), the Congress and the BJP.

The Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) has won 27 seats, surpassing the mandatory halfway mark in the 40-seat assembly required to constitute the upcoming government in Mizoram.

According to the Election Commission of India, the ZPM secured victory in 27 seats.

Incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF) has marked victory only in seven seats and leading three seats.

In a big blow for the ruling Mizo National Front, a constituent of the BJP-helmed NDA, Chief Minister Zoramthanga lost Aizawl East-I seat to Lalthansanga of ZPM by 2,101 votes.

the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept Siaha district bordering Myanmar with K. Beichhua winning the Saiha seat by defeating H.C. Lalmalsawma Zasai of MNF by 616 votes after K. Hrahmo won the Palak seat. This is the BJP's best-ever performance in Mizoram.

Mizoram Chief Minister and MNF candidate Zoramthanga lost to ZPM's Lalthansanga by 2,101 votes in the Aizawl East-1 seat, according to the Election Commission.

Lalthansanga secured 10,727 votes, while Zoramthanga got 8,626 votes, it said.

Lalsanglura Ralte of the Congress managed 2,520 votes.

The counting of votes began at 8 am on Monday amid tight security.
