Nitish Kumar is all set to become the Bihar Chief Minister for a record 10th time.
Earlier in the day, Kumar was chosen as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar during a meeting of newly elected MLAs of the alliance partners in Patna. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Samrat Choudhary was elected leader of the BJP legislature party in Bihar, and Vijay Sinha was named deputy leader.
The meeting was held at 'Samvad', located at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, and attended by all newly elected MLAs and 22 Legislative Council members of the party, reported ANI.
Nitish Kumar was elected the NDA’s legislative leader following the coalition's sweeping victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. The alliance bagged 202 out of 243 seats.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar submitted his resignation on Wednesday as part of the formal process to form the new government, one he is set to lead again after the NDA's victory.
Governor Arif Mohammad Khan accepted his resignation and asked him to continue as caretaker chief minister until the new government is formed, BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal told reporters.
The new NDA government will take oath on Thursday at the iconic Gandhi Maidan, where the 74-year-old leader will be sworn in as the chief minister for the record 10th time.
As many as 20 ministers are likely to take oath with the CM – around 6-7 ministers each from the BJP and the JD(U), according to a report in The Indian Express.
There will also be two ministers from the LJP (RV) and one each from the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), who will take oath along with Kumar on Thursday, according to reports.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several top NDA leaders are set to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Nitish Kumar and his cabinet at Gandhi Maidan on Thursday, news wire PTI reported citing sources.
Among the NDA, the BJP won 89 seats, emerging as the single largest party, followed by the JD(U) with 85 seats. The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP-RV) secured 19 seats, while its two other allies won 9 seats.
Meanwhile, the opposition Mahagathbandhan (MGB) — led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and allied with others like the Indian National Congress (INC) — secured only 35 seats.
