Notably, Nikhil has contested Mandya's seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election but lost to BJP-backed Independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh.
Although Nikhil's launch to politics failed in 2019, he is set to face Indian National Congress' Iqbal Hussain HA, and Goutham Gowda from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

JD(S) leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy is trailing from family's bastion, according to the Election Commission of India. Congress candidate Iqbal Hussain is ahead by 9,609 votes from Nikhil Kumaraswamy. In 2018, Nikhil's father HD Kumaraswamy defeated Hussain from the Ramanagara seat.
