New Delhi: The trends of the Election Commission suggested that the BJP had bettered its performance of the 2014 general elections in 2019, and the party was leading in 285 seats. In the 2014 general elections, the BJP had won 282 seats with a 31% vote share.

In Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP was up against the combined strength of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the vote share of the BJP was over 50%, while in Bihar the vote share of the NDA was also over 50%. The states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were crucial as the two states send 120 Members of Parliament (MPs).

The dominance in vote share continued in Gujarat where the BJP was looking to get at least 61.9% votes, while in Rajasthan the vote share was around 59%. Similar trends continued in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, where the BJP was looking to get 58% and 50% votes. The combined vote share of the NDA in Maharashtra was also around 50%.

The importance of these seven states can be understood from the fact that out of the 259 Lok Sabha seats, the BJP had won 206 seats. These state account for 47% of the seats in the Lok Sabha.
