Alleging “grave security threat" to party president Rahul Gandhi, the Congress on Thursday demanded that the Union home ministry should conduct a thorough investigation into the “breach in security" during his visit to Amethi.

However, the home ministry has denied any such threat.

Senior Congress leaders, including Ahmed Patel, Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Singh Surjewala, in a letter to home minister Rajnath Singh said that “a laser (green) was pointed at his head, intermittently on at least seven separate occasions" during an interaction, after he filed his nomination in Amethi on Wednesday. They demanded full protection be ensured to the leader.

A senior official of the home ministry said that there was no security implication.

“The “green light" shown in the clipping was found to be that of a mobile phone used by the AICC photographer, who was videographing the impromptu press interaction of Rahul Gandhi near the collectorate at Amethi."
