Days after officially calling off alliance talks with Congress in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) finalised an alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) in Haryana with the JJP contesting polls in seven seats and AAP in three seats. The two parties have also agreed to extend this alliance for state assembly elections which are set to take place later this year.
Haryana has 10 Lok Sabha seats which go to poll on 12 May. The alliance aims to fight in the state which is so far seeing a contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress.
“Together we hope to develop Haryana especially in areas of education and health where the Delhi government has done great work. Jhadu (AAP's election symbol) and chappal (JJP's poll symbol) will remove obstructions and emerge victorious, and together they will defeat the BJP and Congress. The alliance is the coming together of the Aam (common man) and the Jan (people),” Dushyant Chautala said while announcing the alliance in a press conference.
Also present at the announcement were Delhi cabinet minister Gopal Rai, AAP Haryana president Naveen Jaihind.
The AAP had supported the JJP during the recent by-poll elections in Haryana. JJP has been launched by former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala's grandson Dushyant Chautala, after he broke off from the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) a few months back.
Earlier, AAP national convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had hinted of an alliance in Haryana with Congress and JJP to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“People of Haryana wanted this. Congratulations to the people of Haryana. Together, we will defeat BJP and work for development of Haryana,” AAP national convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said.
The two parties have set up a coordination committee to work on a common vision document for Haryana. The AAP which is contesting elections in the states of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Goa will come out with a separate manifesto nationally.
