With just couple of months left for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024, Congress party have made an 'unreasonable' demand to Samajwadi Party for Uttar Pradesh seats, asking 20 out of 80 seats, reported Economic Times on 18 January.
Both Congress and Samajwadi Party are part of INDIA bloc, and are fighting polls in alliance.
"The exact number of seats were discussed. Congress has sought 20 seats. The list of seats was also discussed. Both parties have decided to meet again, and hold talks seat by seat," ET quoted a senior leader as saying, adding, there was no discussion on an alliance with Bahujan Samaj Party or Rashtriya Lok Dal.
Earlier on Wednesday, Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) held the second round of seat-sharing talks in Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The discussions that lasted for two hours were held at the residence of Congress leader Mukul Wasnik, who is also the convener of the party’s seat-sharing committee, and attended by senior leaders from both allies in the opposition INDIA bloc, reported Hindustan Times.
Earlier in 2019, BJP secured 49.56 percent vote share, BSP 19.26 percent, SP 17.96 percent and Congress 6.31 percent respectively.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Wednesday said the seat-sharing talks within the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) ahead of the 2024 national were going on. “It would take some time before a final picture emerges,” he said responding to the queries about a delay in the seat sharing. “It does not happen so fast," reported HT.
On the speculation of a rift between RJD and ally Janata Dal (United) or JD(U), Lalu evaded queries.
It is believed that JD(U) may demand 17 seats, insisting it should get all seats it won in 2019 and leaving the rest for RJD, Congress, and three Left parties.
