Lok Sabha Polls 2024 Highlights: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will on April 15 be in Kerala as a part of their campaigns for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will campaign in violence-hit Manipur.

Lok Sabha Polls 2024 Highlights: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today campaigned in Kerala as a part of their campaigns for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024. 

The Prime Minister addressed first public meeting in Thrissur where he said the new year will mark beginning of new politics in Kerala. The PM said that Congress governments in the past had portrayed India as a weak country. He said today when an Indian goes abroad, he is treated with respect. "Today's India has the power to rescue its citizens trapped in war. Today's India does not look towards other countries in an epidemic like COVID-19. We make indigenous vaccines. Along with our country, we also help other countries of the world," the PM said.

The PM will also address a meeting in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram. This is PM Modi’s sixth visit to the state this year. After the meetings in Kerala, the PM will head to Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu for Lok Sabha campaign. 

The Election Commission of India said on Monday that it was on track for the highest ever seizures of inducements in the 75-year history of Lok Sabha elections in the country. Enforcement Agencies have made a record seizure of over 4,650 crores even before the first phase of polling for the 18th Lok Sabha elections commences on Friday, the poll panel said. Each day about 100 Crore have been seized since March 1, the poll panel said. 

Rahul Gandhi campaigned in his constituency Wayanad. Rahul Gandhi is seeking re-election from Wayanad seat that he won in 2019. All 20 Lok Sabha seats of the state go to polls in the second phase on April 16.

Among other leaders, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah also addressed public rally in Kumarghat of Tripura as part of BJP’s poll campaign. Later, the Home Minister will head to Hapta Kangjeibung in Imphal, Manipur to attend a public meeting, Also, BJP national president JP Nadda is in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand for public meeting while Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is in Jammu and Kashmir.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday will participate in roadshows in Rajasthan’s Alwar and Dausa while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will hold a rally in Puducherry today.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its election manifesto, known as the “Sankalp Patra," on April 14 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. The Congress released its manifesto on April 5.

Congress leader and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar will contest Lok Sabha elections against Manoj Tiwari from North East seat in the national capital. Kumar was among the ten names that the Congress party released in its latest list of candidates on April 14. Among others, former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi will contest form Jalandhar. 

Apart from three seats in Delhi, where the party is contesting the Lok Sabha election in alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress party announced six seats in Punjab and one seat in Uttar Pradesh in the latest list.

In another news, the Supreme Court will today hear Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate.

Voting for 543 Lok Sabha seats will be held in seven phases with the first phase scheduled on April 19. The counting of votes will take place on June 4. Stay with LiveMint to track live updates on Lok Sabha elections.

Lok Sabha Polls 2024 LIVE: Several Chandigarh Cong leaders resign against party leader's remarks on Pawan Bansal

Several party leaders including Chandigarh Mahila Congress chief resigned from their respective posts over the "disrespect" shown to former Union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal allegedly by Chandigarh Congress president H S Lucky. 

Those who have tendered resignations are considered close to Bansal. The move came on a day when Congress candidate Manish Tewari visited the party office in Chandigarh. 

Tewari and Bansal were the contenders for the candidature for the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat. However, the party chose Tewari over Bansal.

Lok Sabha Polls 2024 LIVE: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi declares assets worth ₹21 crore

BJP leader and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and his family have declared assets worth over 21 crore in his affidavit for the Lok Sabha election. 

While filing his nomination as a BJP candidate from Dharwad Lok Sabha segment on Monday, Joshi declared movable assets worth 2.72 crore in his name, 5.93 crore in his wife Jyoti's name, and 32.03 lakh in their dependent daughter Ananya Joshi's name. 

The former state BJP chief has immovable assets worth 11.24 crore in his name and 86.39 lakh in his wife's name. The couple together have total liabilities of 8.01 crore, according to the election affidavit.

Lok Sabha Polls 2024 LIVE: Cash, gold, liquor, freebies worth over ₹126 crore seized in Telangana

Law enforcement agencies have seized cash, gold, liquor, and articles meant for distribution as freebies totalling over 126 crore, till April 14 as part of implementing the Model Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana, elections officials said on Monday. 

The cumulative seized amount of 126,13,74,210 includes over 50 crore in cash, gold, silver, and other valuables worth over 13 crore, liquor worth over 20 crore, drugs/narcotics valued at 22 crore and other items/freebies worth over 18 crore, according to a statement issued by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. 

Polling will be held on May 13 for all 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana.

Lok Sabha Polls 2024 LIVE: The Election Commission of India said on Monday that it was on track for the highest ever seizures of inducements in the 75-year history of Lok Sabha elections in the country. Enforcement Agencies have made a record seizure of over 4,650 crores in ECI’s resolute fight against money power even before the first phase of polling for the 18th Lok Sabha elections commences on Friday, the poll panel said. This marks a sharp increase over 3475 crores seized during the entire Lok Sabha election in 2019. Significantly, 45 per cent of the seizures are of drugs and narcotics, that are under the special focus of the Commission. The seizures have been possible by comprehensive planning, scaled up collaboration and unified deterrence action from agencies, proactive citizen participation and optimal engagement of technology.

Lok Sabha Polls 2024 LIVE: Congress to contest fewest seats ever in Lok Sabha Polls

Lok Sabha Polls 2024 LIVE: The Congress party will field the least number of candidates since independence for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024, due to alliance commitments. This comes at a time when the Lok Sabha numbers have come down drastically for the grand old party in last two general elections. 

The party has so far announced 278 candidates from 27 states and eight Union territories. The party is expected to announce at least 20 names of candidates in the coming days. These include candidates from Haryana, Bihar, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, UP and a couple of seats in West Bengal. So the total seats that the grand old party is expected to contest will be around 300.

The Congress contested 421 seats in 2019, 464 in 2014, 440 in 2009. The party contested 417 seats in 2004 which the lowest it contested of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. The party won 52 seats in 2019, 44 in 2014, 206 in 2009 and 145 seats in 2004.
