Posters featuring Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and the slogan "Amethi ki janta kare pukaar, Robert Vadra ab ki baar" surfaced outside the Congress party's office in Amethi's Gauriganj on Wednesday.

As the Congress party has yet to announce its candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024 in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi constituency, these posters have sparked speculation about Vadra's potential candidacy, especially with the nomination filing deadline approaching.

Commenting on the development, Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak stated, “His brother-in-law (Rahul Gandhi) will decide whether they will field him (Robert Vadra) as a candidate. I do not have such information. He is known for expertise in that area – purchasing and acquiring properties."

The posters surfaced a day after BJP candidate for Amethi, Smriti Irani took a jibe at Rahul Gandhi and his brother-in-law, saying that Vadra has an eye on the constituency, stating, "Jijaji ki nazar hai, saale sahab kya karenge?" ("The brother-in-law has his eyes set, what will the brother do?")

"There's one concern, whether Rahul Gandhi knows anything or not, his brother-in-law knows Jagdishpur. The people of Jagdishpur should be cautious now. If his brother-in-law knows Jagdishpur, every village, every household, every individual should now consider hiding their property documents," the minister said.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Smriti Irani secured victory over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. Amethi is scheduled to vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20.

Robert Vadra had earlier made a pitch for his own candidature claiming that the people of Amethi expect him to represent their constituency if he thinks of becoming a member of Parliament.

“They desire the return of a member of the Gandhi family, and they envision their victory with a significant margin. Moreover, they anticipate that if I venture into politics and contemplate becoming a Member of Parliament, I should represent Amethi," he had said.
