Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday described the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections held on January 15 as a "strange" and desperate fight for his opponents, according to ANI.
He levelled serious accusations, claiming the ruling alliance used "every method possible," from distributing cash to the alleged kidnapping of candidates, to force withdrawals and secure a win.
Addressing a press conference after the poll debacle, Thackeray said, "This election was very strange. It felt like this was a life-and-death election for them. They opted for all methods, from cash to kidnapping our candidates; they forced candidates to withdraw their nominations."
A day after the Mahayuti alliance secured a majority in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday claimed he received numerous complaints from citizens regarding missing names from the voter list, according to ANI.
Addressing a press conference here, Thackeray said that the results were "surprising" at various locations.
"Where did those numbers come from? Was it from some party office? Before counting numbers were seen on TV. In future, there will be no EVM, and the direct results will be declared. I have received several complaints from voters that their names were missing from the voter list. At various locations, the results are surprising. I had doubts about the exit polls," he added," the UBT President said.
Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday hailed the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance's performance in the Maharashtra local body elections, attributing it to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's good governance and the work carried out by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, according to ANI.
Speaking to the media, Prasad said that the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance had won in 26 municipal bodies across Maharashtra. He termed the outcome a "splendid victory," noting that the BJP had registered major wins in cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur after nearly three decades.
"In 26 municipal bodies across the entire Maharashtra, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has won. After 30 years, the BJP has achieved splendid victories in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, and in all the big cities. Where is Congress? Where has Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena gone?.. This entire victory is due to Prime Minister Modi's good governance and Devendra Fadnavis's work. A triple-engine government will now work in Maharashtra...Rahul Gandhi also knows that first in Bihar, Maharashtra municipal corporations and now in Bengal, we will win everywhere", he said.
Haryana Cabinet Minister Anil Vij on Saturday stated that the public has rejected the politics of "false promises" and endorsed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development-focused agenda, as per PTI.
Commenting on Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut’s "Jaichand" remark following the BJP’s sweeping victory in the Maharashtra BMC elections, Vij noted that the BJP had already won Assembly elections in Haryana, Delhi, and Bihar, and has now also triumphed in Maharashtra.
Raut had said on Friday that Mumbai would not have seen a BJP mayor if Maharashtra Deputy Chief Eknath Shinde had not betrayed the party.
He tweeted, "Had Eknath Shinde not been a Jaichand to Shiv Sena, Mumbai would not have seen a BJP mayor. Marathi people will always remember Shinde as Jaichand."
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Maharashtra State President Ravindra Chavan on Saturday met the newly elected corporators of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) following the announcement of the civic poll results, as per ANI.
During the meeting, Chavan emphasised that the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation should be from the Mahayuti alliance, asserting that the citizens have endorsed the alliance's development-oriented governance.
Speaking to reporters Ravindra Chavan said, "We had decided that the Mahayuti's Mayor should sit in the Municipal Corporation. The citizens of Mumbai supported the development work carried out by us."
The Shiv Sena has opted to move its newly elected corporators to a luxury hotel as the contest for Mumbai’s next mayor intensifies, as per PTI. The Eknath Shinde-led faction had contested 90 seats and secured 29 in the Mumbai civic polls, with results announced on Friday. A senior party leader stated that the corporators were being shifted to a luxury hotel in Bandra to help them "refresh" after a demanding election period, though no specifics were given on how long they would stay. Another party official said the move was also aimed at orienting the newly elected members and noted that the corporators would remain in the hotel for a couple of days.
Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC on Saturday slammed Sanjay Raut after the latter called Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde 'Jaichand', stating that it was the Shiv Sena (UBT) MP who betrayed his ideology when he "sat on the lap of Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)" in 2019.
Reacting to Raut's remarks, she mentioned that Eknath Shinde does not require any "certificate" from Sanjay Raut and accused the UBT leader of "betraying his ideology".
"The person who has done so much work for Maharashtra, perhaps Sanjay Raut cannot digest this, but Eknath Shinde does not need Sanjay Raut's certificate. Sanjay Raut has forgotten that in 2019, he went and sat on the lap of the Congress and the NCP. He betrayed his ideology. Sanjay Raut now probably needs a new scriptwriter," Shaina told ANI.
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) (UBT) on Saturday reacted following the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, striking a defiant tone and signalling that the political fight in Maharashtra is far from over and will continue until the Marathi community receives the respect it deserves.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Saturday said that reports emerging of Congress leader Bhai Jagtap blaming party MP Varsha Gaikwad for the poor performance in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections indicated that the Opposition party was slipping into " tukde tukde" mode, according to ANI.
Reacting to the remarks, Poonawalla said "It is Congress versus Congress. Till now, we have seen it in Delhi. Rahul Congress versus Priyanka Congress. DK Congress versus Siddaramaiah Congress. Gehlot versus Pilot Congress. Now it is Bhai Jagtap versus Varsha Gaikwad Congress," he said.

Maharashtra Election Results LIVE: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Maharashtra State President Ravindra Chavan on Saturday met the newly elected corporators of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) following the announcement of the civic poll results.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut says, “The BJP has not won Mumbai - this is just a temporary phase. You cannot win Mumbai like this. They (BJP) fulfilled their dream of making a Mayor by breaking our party. After this election, Eknath Shinde’s time is over. The BJP no longer needs him. Ajit Pawar will also not remain in power for long, given the way he spread venom against the government and Devendra Fadnavis in Pimpri Chinchwad. The BJP is angry. Both NCP factions will have to work together. Eknath Shinde will have to step aside, as the BJP will not take him along in the next Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.”
When asked whether his party, AIMIM, would support the BJP in electing the mayor of Mumbai, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said, "That question does not arise. In Akot, the people elected five corporators on the AIMIM symbol. We had sent them a show-cause notice... And I had personally warned them when they met me in Amaravati that they must not take any policy decision. I told them very clearly that alliance or no alliance party will decide. But keep this in your mind. We cannot go with the BJP or the NDA at all. So they made a mistake in supporting a BJP-sponsored candidate. Immediately, our state president had suspended them..."
President, Maharashtra BJP, Ravindra Chavan says, "... We had decided that the Mahayuti’s Mayor should sit in the Municipal Corporation. The citizens of Mumbai supported the development work carried out by us..."
Here's MNS chief Raj Thackeray's full statement (rough translation of his X post):
"First and foremost, heartfelt congratulations to all the elected corporators from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena. This election was not an easy one. It was a battle of unyielding financial power and the might of authority against Shivshakti. Yet, even in such a contest, the workers from both sides put up an excellent fight. Their praise cannot be enough.
Though Maharashtra Navnirman Sena did not achieve the expected success this time, and that brings sorrow, we are not the ones to get disheartened by it. Our elected corporators will more than hold their own against the ruling powers wherever they are. And if anything seems to go against the Marathi people, they will certainly bring those in power to task.
Our fight is for the Marathi people, the Marathi language, Marathi identity, and for a prosperous Maharashtra. This fight is our very existence. You all know well that such battles are long-term.
As for what went wrong, what was left undone, where we fell short, and what needs to be done, we will all come together for the analysis and action.
Truth be told, you don't really need me to tell you this. But still, I say—whether in the MMR region or across the state, those in power and their supporters will not let go of any opportunity to harass the Marathi people. Therefore, we must stand firmly behind our Marathi people. Elections will come and go, but we must never forget that our breath is Marathi.
Let's meet again soon. Let's get back to work. Let's rebuild our party and organization anew!!!
Yours humbly,
Raj Thackeray"
On his tweet regarding Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut says, "BJP wins by creating 'Jaichands'. Otherwise, what is the BJP's strength? In every state, in every city, they break up every party and create 'Jaichand' to win elections. They are equal to zero. What is the Deputy Chief Minister's strength? As long as they are in power, people will salute them; otherwise, people will throw shoes at their cars."
On BMC results, he said, "As Chief Minister, he has unlimited power; he has the police, he has many other people and resources at his disposal, he has money, he has everything. Even if it were another Chief Minister, the results would have been the same. The biggest battle was in Mumbai. We shouldn't assume that the BJP won in Mumbai. It is balanced. The MNS got fewer seats; they should have gotten around 15, that's what I think. We lost 10 to 15 seats by a very small margin. But in the BMC, the opposition's strength is equal to that of the ruling party. We have 105 people inside. What will these people do? They can't sell Mumbai. We are sitting there. Even if we lose our lives, we will end the rule of these contractors."
