
Mokama Assembly Election: Janata Dal (United) leader Anant Singh, who is in jail after his arrest in a murder case, has clinched a stunning victory in Mokama by an impressive margin of over 28,000 votes.
Mokama witnessed a high-stakes battle in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, with the Janata Dal (United) fielding strongman Anant Singh, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) nominated Veena Devi, wife of former MP and influential leader Surajbhan Singh. Meanwhile, the Jan Suraaj Party put forward Priyadarshi Piyush as its candidate.
Mokama, a part of the Munger Lok Sabha seat, went to the polls on 6 November. Singh won the seat by 28,206 votes, defeating RJD's Devi.
Mokama has long been known as a bastion of powerful and often controversial “strongmen” (bahubalis) in Bihar politics, most prominently Anant Kumar Singh, his brother Dilip Singh, and Surajbhan Singh.
The recent murder of Dularchand Yadav, a Jan Suraaj Party supporter, has once again thrust Mokama into the spotlight. Anant Kumar Singh was arrested on 2 November in connection with the murder of Dular Chand Yadav.
Yadav, a gangster-turned-politician, was earlier associated with the RJD. He was killed while campaigning in Mokama for Priyadarshi Piyush.
This year, the political contest in the Mokama Assembly constituency revolves around two dominant bahubalis, Anant Singh and Surajbhan Singh, whose influence continues to shape the region’s political landscape.
JDU's Anant Singh was leading against RJD's Veena Devi by a margin of 11,055 votes as of 10:49 AM, according to the Election Commission website.
Anant Singh was leading by a margin of 13,634 votes as of 11:40 AM, according to the trends.
Jailed ‘Chota Sarkar’ extended his lead to 17,050 votes after round 17 at 1:00 PM, the ECI website showed.
Anant Singh led by a margin of 24,798 votes at 2:40 pm. He won by 28,206 votes, defeating RJD's Veena Devi, according to the ECI.
In the 2022 Bihar Assembly by-election for the Mokama constituency, Nilam Devi of the RJD retained the seat with 79,744 votes, capturing 53.44% of the vote share, a +0.45% increase from the previous election.
Sonam Devi of the BJP secured 63,003 votes (42.22%), contesting the seat for the first time. NOTA (None of the Above) received 2,470 votes (1.66%), a decline of −1.39%. The majority margin was 16,741 votes (11.22%), with a voter turnout of 1,49,321 (53.09%). The result marked an RJD hold, with a modest swing in their favour.
