Six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai went to polls in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on Monday. These six seats were Mumbai North, Mumbai North West, Mumbai North East, Mumbai North Central, Mumbai South and Mumbai South Central. The region witnessed a high-profile contest, mainly between candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the INDIA bloc.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal was in fray from the Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency, where he is pitted against Bhushan Patil of Congress. In the Mumbai North Central constituency, the contest is between Advocate Ujwal Nikam from the BJP and Varsha Eknath Gaikwad of the Congress.
Mumbai North West Lok Sabha Constituency witnessed the battle between two Shiv Sena factions. Ravindra Wairkar represents the CM Eknath Shinde faction, while Amol Gajanan Kirtikar is from the Uddhav Thackeray faction. BJP's Mihir Kotecha is against Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sanjaydina Patil in the Mumbai North East Lok Sabha constituency.
The South Central Lok Sabha constituency of Mumbai witnessed a fight between Ramesh Shewele from the Shiv Sena and Anil Desai from the Shiv Sena (UBT). Arvind Sawant from the Shiv Sena (UBT) is hoping to secure a third term from the Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat, while the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena has fielded Yamini Jadhav to ruin his plans.
Maharashtra recorded 53% voter turnout as of 10 pm on Monday.
Maharashtra recorded the lowest voter turnout among eight states at 49 percent. Within Maharashtra, Kalyaan Lok Sabha constituency recorded the lowest tally at 43 percent. But when just focusing on the Mumbai region, Mumbai South recorded the lowest turnout at 44 percent.

Maharashtra has recorded the lowest turnout at 48 percent till 5 pm. Thirteen seats in Maharashtra were among other seats across eight states that went to polls on Monday.
Music director Amit Trivedi said he couldn't cast vote today. “Voting is our constitutional right. Today I was denied that right and I feel helpless. Did this happen to anyone else? How.. and why??," he said in a post on X.
Many reacted to his video, asking if he checked his EPIC number before going out to vote.
Mumbai South recorded lowest voter turnout in the Mumbai region at nearly 37%. The rest five seats recorded turnout between 37% and 39%.
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya on Monday alleged that Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Sanjay Raut and Sunil Raut were found involved in "corrupt practices" outside their polling booth at Bhandup in Mumbai where voting was underway since morning.
The former MP also claimed that two activists of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) were arrested for "illegal and corrupt practices of using a fake EVM".
However, MLA Sunil Raut, who is the brother of Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut, dismissed the allegations saying a dummy electronic voting machine (EVM) was kept outside the 100-metre radius of the polling booth for educational purpose.
Still, the police removed it under "political pressure", he claimed.
Mumbai continued to disappoint with voter turnout failing to cross 30 per cent till 1 pm.
Mumbai North recorded a turnout of 26.78 per cent;
Mumbai North Central saw a turnout of 28.05 per cent,
Mumbai North East saw a turnout of 28.82 per cent,
Mumbai North West recorded a turnout of 28.41 per cent.
Mumbai South had the lowest turnout in the city with 28.41 per cent recorded till 1 pm.
Mumbai South Central saw a turnout of 27.21 per cent.

Exercising his right to vote during the fifth phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2024, veteran lyricist Gulzar on Monday arrived at his designated polling booth in Mumbai with his daughter Meghna Gulzar, who is a renowned director.
The father-daughter duo briefly interacted with the media and emphasised the importance of voting.
"Our city is becoming beautiful and we have cast our vote for the development of our city," Gulzar said right after casting his vote.
Urging people to participate in the elections, Meghna said, "Issues of the people keep changing with time and it is the responsibility of the government to solve them. Voting is a responsibility, and it is important that we exercise our right to vote..."
On the day of the Phase 5 Lok Sabha election, the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) announced a 20% "Democracy Discount" to all voters at participating restaurants in Mumbai on May 20 and 21. The customers need to prove that they have cast a vote to avail of the 20% off on their order. NRAI confirmed that more than 100 restaurants are participating in the "Democracy Discount" initiative. "All participating Restaurants will offer a 20% discount on the total bill value to those dine-in customers who are residents as per their voter ID and have cast their vote with an inked finger," NRAI said.

Mumbai Lok Sabha Election 2024 Voting Live: The fifth phase of polling for Lok Sabha polls on May 20 across 49 parliamentary constituencies spread over six states and two Union Territories (UTs) saw a voter turnout of 23.66 per cent till 11 am, the Election Commission (ECI) said on Monday.

Mumbai Lok Sabha Election 2024 Voting Live: Amid voting underway in 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Monday claimed there were lot of complaints from electors about facilities outside the polling booths.
Voters were trying to beat the heat and exercise their franchise in large numbers, the former state minister said, adding that electors should at least be made to queue up in shade and provided fans.

Veteran actress Shubha Khote, who is in her 80s, arrived at a polling booth in Mumbai early Monday morning to cast her vote in the fifth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking to media persons after voting, Shubha said she did not opt for the facility of home-voting as she wanted to inspire her fellow citizens to step out and exercise their right to vote.
"I have voted for the right candidate. I did not opt for home-voting and voted here so that people get inspired and come out and vote...," said 86, year-old Shubha, a film and TV actress, who is famed for her roles in 'Junoon', 'Zabaan Sambhal Ke' and 'Andaaz' among others. She has acted in Hindi and Marathi films and TV serials. (ANI)
