Beloved actress Catherine O’Hara — known around the world for her roles in ‘Schitt’s Creek’, ‘Home Alone’ and numerous comedy classics — died earlier this year at the age of 71. Now, new details from official records have shed light on the cause of her death, offering clarity after weeks of speculation and mourning.
O’Hara’s death was first announced by her manager on 30 January 2026, when the entertainment industry and fans alike were stunned by the loss of the Emmy-winning performer.
At the time, only a “brief illness” was cited. Now the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has released her death certificate, confirming that a pulmonary embolism was the immediate cause of death. An underlying case of rectal cancer was also listed, indicating that the disease contributed to her fatal blood clot.
A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery in the lung, a sudden and often fatal condition if not treated swiftly. Medical sources describe it as a serious complication that can arise from a range of health issues, including cancer-related factors that increase clotting risk.
Rectal cancer is part of a broader category known as colorectal cancer, which the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists as the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country.
It occurs when abnormal cells in the rectum grow out of control and can be especially aggressive when diagnosis comes late or if it spreads.
O’Hara’s family had kept her health struggles private. Before her death, she had not publicly revealed any battle with cancer. Friends and colleagues say even those closest to her were largely unaware of the seriousness of her illness until her sudden collapse.
Born in Toronto in March 1954, O’Hara’s career spanned more than five decades and touched multiple generations. She began in sketch comedy with the influential troupe Second City in Canada before moving into film and television.
Her early work included roles in Christopher Guest films such as ‘Waiting for Guffman’ and ‘Best in Show’, where her comedic timing and character work stood out.
O’Hara became a household name for her role as Kate McCallister, the loving but harried mother in the ‘Home Alone’ films. She achieved further acclaim as Moira Rose on ‘Schitt’s Creek’, a performance that won her an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe, as part of that show’s breakout success.
In recent years, she continued to find work across genres, earning Emmy nominations for her roles in Apple TV+’s ‘The Studio’ and HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’.
Her ‘The Last of Us’ co-star Pedro Pascal remembered her and made a sweet post on Instagram. He wrrote, “Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful. There is less light in my world, this lucky world that had you, will keep you, always. Always ♥️ The one and ONLY #CatherineOHara (sic).”
At the time of her death, she was actively starring in The Studio, a series that had just completed its first season and was renewed for a second.
