Deb Mukherjee, father of Ayan Mukerji, passes away at 83; funeral at 4 pm in Mumbai

Veteran actor Deb Mukherjee, father of well-known director Ayan Mukerji, died at 83 due to age-related ailments. Mukherjee was not keeping well and was hospitalised, where he passed away at 9:30 am on March 14. His funeral is scheduled for 4 pm today at Pawan Hans Crematorium in Mumbai, according to a report by Hindustan Times.

Mukherjee was dealing with age-related health issues, the report quoted a spokesperson as saying.

The funeral is expected to be attended by his family members, including Kajol and Ajay Devgn, Rani Mukerji, Tanuja, Tanissha, and Aditya Chopra. Ayan Mukerji's friends, such as Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Hrithik Roshan, Sidharth Malhotra, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh, are likely to be present at the funeral ceremony, the report said, citing people aware of the development.

Deb Mukherjee was born on November 22, 1941, in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He was known for popular films such as Karate (1983), Kaminey (2009) and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992).

Deb Mukherjee's family

Deb belongs to the Mukherjee-Samarth family, which has been part of the Hindi film industry since the 1930s. He also produced prominent films such as Dil Deke Dekho (1959), Love in Simla (1960), Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (1962) and Leader (1964).

Satidevi Mukherjee, Deb's mother, also belonged to a family engaged in the Hindi film industry. She was the sister of Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. Deb had four siblings, including his brother Joy Mukherjee, who is known for his films Humsaya (1968), Chhailla Babu (1977) and Love in Bombay (1974). Apart from Joy, Deb's brother Shomu Mukherjee was an acclaimed director. He was married to actress Tanuja.

Deb married twice. His daughter from the first marriage, Sunita, is married to filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, who is known for films such as Panipat (2019), Mohenjodaro (2016), Jodha Akbar (2008) and Swades (2004). Ayan Mukerji is Deb's son from his second marriage. Ayan is known for films such as Brahmastra (2022), Wake Up Sid (2009) and Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani (2013).
