Jana Nayagan: Supreme Court dismisses producer's plea for CBFC clearance; Thalapathy Vijay's Tamil movie delayed further

SC refuses to interfere at this stage on the plea by the Jana Nayagan producer. While dismissing KVN Production's plea seeking CBFC clearance, the Supreme Court has asked the Jana Nayagan producer to raise the arguments before the Madras High Court's Division Bench. SC has also asked the Division bench of Madras HC to hear the plea on 20 January.

Thalapathy Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, now faces further release delay. The legal dispute continues over its censor certificate. The film was originally planned as a Pongal release on 9 January.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has withheld clearance. It has cited concerns about excessive violence and the alleged portrayal of certain groups. This led the producers to approach the courts for urgent relief.

Some Kerala distributors announced a tentative plan to release the movie on 14 January. However, until the CBFC certification is granted, that remains uncertain as well.

Thalapathy Vijay in politics

Jana Nayagam is Thalapathy Vijay’s last release as an actor. After this, he will join full-time politics with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

He has officially retired from acting to focus entirely on his political career. Vijay is TVK's chief ministerial candidate in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. The party has plans to contest all 234 assembly seats.

Thalapathy Vijay has outlined an ideology he calls “Secular Social Justice”. It combines Dravidian thought inspired by Periyar with strong Tamil nationalism.

Vijay has named BR Ambedkar, Periyar and K. Kamaraj as his main ideological influences. However, he has clearly said he does not follow Periyar’s atheistic beliefs.

His party, TVK, has passed resolutions against NEET, the Waqf Amendment Bill and the Centre’s “One Nation, One Election” proposal.

Vijay has taken a firm stand against the BJP and openly calls it his ideological enemy. He accuses the party of promoting divisive politics and being anti-Tamil in approach.

Vijay has ruled out any alliance with the BJP or the AIADMK, which is currently aligned with the BJP.
