John Abraham has expressed his admiration for Russia. Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the Bollywood actor voiced his support for Vladimir Putin’s country during an interview with Aaj Tak while promoting his new film The Diplomat.
John said, “I say this on record. I’m a huge fan of Russia. Of course, no one wants wars. I don’t want people to die, whether from Russia or from Ukraine. Russia has been screaming for 30 years, ‘NATO, please don’t come here’. But, nobody was listening to them.”
He also supported India’s neutral stance on the war, praising the government’s decision to continue purchasing Russian oil despite international pressure. John further said that no country should be allowed to dictate India’s foreign policy decisions.
“I credit India for taking the right stand. Nobody can ask us against buying Russian oil. The oil price is low because of us,” he added.
John Abraham also called External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar the “poster boy of Indian diplomacy”. Calling himself a big fan of India’s foreign minister, he appreciated Jaishankar’s firm and articulate representation of India’s interests on the global stage.
Social media users reacted to John Abraham’s take on Russia.
“Spitting out HARD facts,” wrote one social media user while another called the actor “Man with brains”.
“Really commendable that atleast one of our so called celebrities is not afraid to take a robust stand on such political issues.Kudos to John Abraham!” remarked another user.
“Finally some Bollywood actor who knows geopolitics,” commented one user.
One user wrote, “Surprised to see a Bollywoodia so well informed on the history of other countries and current affairs!”
Not everyone was impressed, though.
“We bought cheap oil from Russia but the benefit of this was not passed on to the end users. Oil ka price kaha neeche hai (How’s oil price low?),” asked another user.
“Diplomat” movie promote krne ka tarika thoda Kezual hai,” quipped another.
