Bollywood actor John Abraham recently commented on Samay Raina's India’s Got Latent controversy and came out in support of Ranveer Allahbadia. Ranveer, also known as BeerBiceps, is facing legal and public backlash over his ‘Will you watch your parents have sex’ question on the show. While many said there should be some regulation over content in the digital space, John said that the incident has made actors like him scared.
John promoted his latest film The Diplomat during an interview and was asked if he believes that India has become an autocratic democracy. To this, John Abraham told Times Now, “I would like to believe we are not. But when you see certain incidents… what happened like the one with this kid on OTT…Ranveer Allahbadia. When you see something like that happen I feel we have taken it a bit too far. That's my take from it.”
He explained, “I understand that you need to have regulation. Did he say something wrong? Of course. It was horrendous…ridiculous. You don't get away with saying things like that. But do you really need to take it so far ahead that you…”
The interviewer quipped, “Start people putting into jail and stuff?” The actor agreed and continued, “I understand self regulation, certification and censorship but when it is being handled in the way it is being handled, as actors you do get scared. I am honest about it. You are fearful, you get a little scared. You wonder ‘Oh this harsh!’ You don't really need to be so harsh. We all make mistakes.”
When further asked if there should be some rules either self imposed or otherwise for content, John also said, “Then the rules should have been before. There were no rules. You are punishing a person for…if you look at the rule book…I don't think there was any censorship at that point in time when he said what he had to. Look at the stuff that's out there on the internet… that's horrendous. There should be some amount of regulation but the problem is the treatment that you are meting out is probably not justified. This is out of proportion.”
Following the uproar, Ranveer Allahbadia issued an apology, acknowledging his “lapse of judgement". The YouTuber said ‘comedy is not my forte’ in his video apology for the ‘watch your parents have sex’ question.
Ranveer Allahbadia faced mutliple FIRs for his comment. Samay Raina, and other judges present on the show such as Apoorva Makhija, and Ashish Chanchlani, also faced intense criticism and backlash.
