Kit Harington is set to take on the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, replacing Nicholas Hoult, who reportedly exited the production because of scheduling conflicts.
The casting change brings Harington into one of the most prominent roles in the second instalment of the television adaptation, as Lockhart plays a central part in the story based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The role also marks a return to familiar territory for Harington. The actor recently voiced Lockhart in Audible’s Harry Potter audiobooks, which were released late last year, giving him previous experience with the character before taking on the live-action version.
Lockhart is introduced as a celebrated and deeply self-assured wizard whose reputation rests on a series of supposed heroic achievements. Famous for his books and public image, he arrives at Hogwarts as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.
However, his impressive reputation soon begins to unravel. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Lockhart is far less capable than he claims and is not qualified for the position he has taken up at the school.
The character was memorably portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, becoming one of the franchise’s most recognisable comic figures.
Harington, best known for playing Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, now takes on the role as HBO continues work on its ambitious new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series. Season 2 is expected to place Lockhart at the centre of the action as Hogwarts faces the growing threat posed by the mysterious Chamber of Secrets.
HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series will offer a fresh, long-form adaptation of JK Rowling’s seven novels, with each season expected to explore one book in greater detail than the original film series could.
The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is set to premiere on Christmas 2026, introducing a new generation of viewers to Hogwarts and the wizarding world. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The wider cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
Francesca Gardiner serves as the series’ writer, showrunner and executive producer, while Mark Mylod will direct multiple episodes and also executive produce. Filming is taking place at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden, the home of the original Harry Potter films, with the series intended as a more expansive retelling that can delve deeper into characters, storylines and details from the books.
HBO has also begun developing the second season, based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, with new casting announcements including Gilderoy Lockhart.
