The RBI's bank holiday schedule for the month of January 2025 was released earlier. Many people are wondering if there will be a bank holiday for Lohri and Makar Sankranti festivals, celebrated on January 13 and 14.
Makar Sankranti and Bhogi Pongal will be celebrated on Monday, January 13. Banks will be open today as there is no holiday per the RBI calendar.
Makar Sankranti, Lohri, Bhogi Pandigai and Pongal are harvest festivals celebrated across the country in January. Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on January 14, and banks will remain shut in several regions due to the festival.
On January 14, all government and private banks will remain closed in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubhaneshwar, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), Itanagar, Kanpur, and Lucknow.
Apart from Makar Sankranti, other festivals celebrated on January 14 are Uttarayana Punyakala/ Pongal/ Maghe Sankranti/ Magh Bihu. The day also marks the birth anniversary of Hazrat Ali.

January will have 13 holidays in total, including weekends. The RBI releases the bank holiday calendar, which is based on various factors, including national/state holidays, cultural or religious observance, operational requirements, government announcements, and coordination with other banks.
