The Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle monorail network has begun operations in Mumbai. Stretched over 19.54 kilometre this network will be India's first monorail system. The third longest monorail network in the world, aims to change the commuting experience of Mumbai.

"The first 8 km route, which was commissioned in 2014, was used as a mere joyride because there was no last-mile connectivity. But now, with the commissioning of the second phase, passengers can now use it for a hassle free commute," said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis while inaugurating the rail network on Sunday.

Five things about Mumbai's monorail network:

    1. The first phase of 8.26 kilometre of the monorail from Chembur to Wadala was commissioned in 2014. It was built and operated by a consortium of Larsen & Toubro and Malaysian firm Scomi Engineering. The seven stations in the first phase of the monorail corridor are Chembur, V.N.Purav/RC Marg Junction, Fertilizer Township, Bharat Petroleum, Mysore Colony, Bhakti Park and Wadala Depot.

    2. The second phase was implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The authority has allocated 150 crore for the 11.28 km long second phase of the monorail from Wadala to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk, reported PTI.

    3. The 19.17 km Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle Monorail corridor will be the world’s third longest monorail corridor.

4.The Mumbai monorail network plans to operate 120 services with a fleet of seven 4-coach trains between 6am and 10pm daily. The fare for the entire 17-station route, which has been built at a cost of 3,000 crore, has been set at 10, 20, 30 and 40.

    5. The monorail network has the capacity to carry 1.5 to 2 lakh commuters daily. Many parts of the city which are not connected by the suburban rail system or metro rail will be connected by the monorail.
