Karan Johar’s period drama Kalank has exhausted its box office run within a week of release. The Abhishek Varman directed film collected ₹60 lakh on its second Friday after Hollywood biggie, Avengers: Endgame opened to Rs. 52 crore.
“Kalank is rejected. Has a lacklustre extended opening weekend. Will find it difficult to sustain on weekdays. Arrival of Avengers Endgame (on Friday) will hit the business hard,” trade analyst Taran Adarsh had tweeted earlier in the week.
The film that recorded an opening weekend of ₹62.50 crore managed ₹74 crore by the end of the first week and is looking at lifetime business of ₹80 crore, said trade website Box Office India. The numbers would have been even lower but holidays in certain parts of the country thanks to election polling, helped.
Starring Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sanjay Dutt, Kalank did a little better in the bigger circuits of Mumbai and Delhi / Uttar Pradesh while Mysore also performed well for the first five days. The biggest disappointment came from east Punjab considering it is a multiplex dominated area.
Box Office India said non-theatrical revenue has been a life saver for the film which is looking to make around ₹85 crore from the sale of satellite, digital and music rights. The film is also looking at making $6.25 million overseas thanks to the Easter holidays in the US and UK.
