New Delhi: The mixed reviews notwithstanding, Karan Johar’s period drama Kalank has recorded the highest opening day of the year so far. At ₹21 crore, the film beat Akshay Kumar’s Kesari ( ₹20.40 crore), musical drama Gully Boy ( ₹19.26 crore) and ensemble comedy Total Dhamaal ( ₹15.91 crore) to earn the highest first day numbers of 2019 till now.
“Kalank starts with a bang. Emerges biggest opener of 2019 so far," tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh adding that the film has been doing terrific business especially in the multiplexes. The impressive cast and hype coupled with the massive screen count (4,000 across India) and the Mahavir Jayanti holiday have contributed to a big total.
Trade website Box Office India said the film collected around ₹6 crore in Mumbai with both Maharashtra and Gujarat states doing well. Delhi and Uttar Pradesh should together top ₹4 crore while Central India area earnings were similar to films like Total Dhamaal and Kesari where it is telling for young stars like Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt to be in the same range as Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn.
Apart from Dhawan and Bhatt the film stars Madhuri Dixit, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjay Dutt. It has been directed by Abhishek Varman of 2 States fame and has a budget of more than ₹100 crore.
The film enjoys a five-day extended weekend and all of next week before Hollywood superhero flick Avengers: Endgame takes over.
