‘Student Of The Year 2’ opens dull as ‘Avengers: Endgame’ sustains
To be sure, at Rs. 12.06 crore, SOTY 2 is lead actor Shroff’s second highest opening day earner of all timeMeanwhile, 'Avengers: Endgame' continues its solid march at the box office in India
New Delhi: Karan Johar’s campus romance Student Of The Year 2 (SOTY 2) has not really managed to make the most of its popular franchise legacy, and is looking at an opening weekend of around Rs. 37.50 crore. The film starring Tiger Shroff along with debutants Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria was severely hit by the IPL (Indian Premier League) finals on Sunday evening along with the fact that most of the Delhi and National Capital Region was shut until evening due to election polling.
“Student Of The Year 2 witnesses growth on day two, but lacks the appreciation for a solid jump. Mumbai, Delhi, NCR multiplexes (are) performing better. IPL 2019 Final on Sunday will hit the business, evening onwards," trade analyst Taran Adarsh had predicted a day earlier about the film that opened to mixed reviews on Friday.
To be sure, at Rs. 12.06 crore, SOTY 2 is lead actor Shroff’s second highest opening day earner of all time, after his blockbuster action film Baaghi 2 (Rs. 25.10 crore), ahead of other hits like Baaghi (Rs. 11.94 crore) and Heropanti (Rs. 6.63 crore). It also notched up the fifth highest opening day of the year so far after Kalank (Rs. 21.60 crore), Kesari (Rs. 21.06 crore), Gully Boy (Rs. 19.40 crore) and Total Dhamaal (Rs. 16.50 crore).
Trade website Box Office India said Shroff’s films usually bring in good numbers from territories like central India, Assam, Orissa, Nizam and Andhra Pradesh due to the high action quotient and even though this film belongs to a slightly different genre, the figures at these places could have been better. The ongoing Ramzan season could have affected collections in some areas like Nizam though.
Meanwhile, Hollywood smash hit Avengers: Endgame continues its solid march at the box office in India, having earned Rs. 5.50 crore this past Saturday and taking its total earnings to Rs. 342.62 crore at last count. The Anthony and Joe Russo directed film is now among the top five films across all formats in India in terms of net collections, only lagging behind war epic franchise Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Baahubali :The Beginning, Rajinikanth’s science fiction flick 2.0 and Aamir Khan’s Dangal. The last mentioned is the only Hindi film in the list currently.
