Macho movies are muscling out women-centric cinema
- As the box-office rewards hyper-masculine action spectacles, women-led Hindi films are losing out.
NEW DELHI : The odds were against it. It was the weekend of the 2015 IPL (Indian Premier League) finals. How could a movie with a low-profile ensemble cast, headlined by a woman actor, drag viewers away from Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings? And if the audience didn’t troop in on a weekend, the box-office wasn’t going to show much mercy. The naysayers were wrong. That summer belonged to Kangana Ranaut’s comedy drama Tanu Weds Manu Returns. The Aanand L. Rai directed film made at a budget of ₹39 crore, made over ₹148 crore in box office takings, according to trade website Box Office India.
