New Delhi: Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Shadaa has emerged as a dark horse for the Punjabi film industry. At the last count, the romantic comedy directed by Jagdeep Sidhu has earned ₹25.75 crore across the country, emerging as the second- highest net grosser ever for films made in the language after ₹33.50 crore net earnings of Carry On Jatta 2 which is the highest ever for a Punjabi film.
“Shadaa creates history. Becomes first Punjabi film to break the ₹3 crore net collection mark on a Saturday," Atul Mohan, editor of trade magazine Complete Cinema had tweeted about the film. Over the first two weeks of release, Mohan reported, the film registered more than 60% average occupancy.
According to trade website Box Office India, the two-week net box office numbers of Carry On Jatta 2 when released in 2018 were ₹26.50 crore net as the older film had collected ₹10 crore net plus in week two which was an open week before the release of Salman Khan’s Race 3 for Eid. Shadaa is now looking to cross the ₹30 crore mark and become the second film in the language to do so.
The film co-starring Neeru Bajwa has also scored well overseas with earnings of around ₹14.50 crore which takes the worldwide number to nearly ₹45 crore, making it the second Punjabi film to cross ₹50 crore worldwide.
As far as overseas collections go, Shadaa has become the ninth Punjabi film to cross $2 million. The top Punjabi film overseas is 2014 animation film Chaar Sahibzaade with almost $3.6 million, a tough number to breach.
According to the Ficci-EY media and entertainment industry report 2019, the Punjabi film industry has been witnessing an impressive overturn. About 50 Punjabi films were released in 2018 compared with 40 in 2017.
2018 has emerged as one of the most interesting years for Punjabi cinema in terms of box office figures considering the fact that Punjabi films not only gave tough competition to Hindi Films in Punjab, but also made a dent in the theatrical collections of many Hindi films in the overseas market. The box office collection of Punjabi movies in 2018 was approximately Rs. 3.3 billion.
