Friday Film Wrap: ‘Saaho’ big release of the week

New Delhi: Two years after his monster hit Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, Prabhas returns to movie screens with what is the big release of the week.

Multilingual action drama Saaho where he stars alongside Shraddha Kapoor and Neil Nitin Mukesh directed by Sujeeth is all style and no substance, says Khaleej Times. Prabhas no doubt has the charisma and the swagger to make the film likeable. He plays it with enough gravitas to make us want to believe in him, but the script and action sequences are tailored to elicit jeers (or looks of horror/disbelief).

Saaho is stylishly made, but incredibly dull fare, says mirchi9.com. The making reflects a pan-India approach, but sensibilities and content are neither here and nor there. A rich camouflage can never conceal the inherent hollowness. Saaho is a prime example. If you are a fan, you might want to check out to watch the hero on the big screen after a long gap. But, beyond that, there is no other reason to recommend a theatre visit.

For the Hollywood fans, survival horror thriller 47 Meters Down: Uncaged directed by Johannes Roberts starring Sophie Nélisse, Corinne Foxx, Brianne Tju and Sistine Stallone comes to India this week. Roberts has added a slick sheen to a mostly unnecessary Strangers sequel, says The Guardian and this time around he’s been given what feels like a slight upgrade in budget, working hard to make a film designated for the big rather than small screen. It’s The Descent meets Sanctum but with screechy teens, and it’s this added jeopardy that prevents it from becoming yet another shark movie.

Roberts and screenwriter Ernest Riera, need to capitalize on the success of their minimalist aquatic thriller 47 Meters Down without doing something as unimaginative as just going further beneath the surface, says The Hollywood Reporter. In 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, the filmmakers set sightless great whites loose in an ancient underwater ruin, and despite having no connection in terms of character or setting to the first film, the results are very similar: The picture delivers enough easy scares to please crowds, while missing many opportunities to up the ante and tossing in moments likely to make discerning moviegoers groan.

Tamil action thriller Mayuran starring Anjan Dev and Vela Ramamoorthy directed by Nandan Subbrayan lacks an emotional connect and smart writing, says The Times Of India. The making, too, falls short in many places.

Tamil romantic comedy Sixer starring Pallak Lalwani and Ilavarasu directed by Chachi is an enjoyable comedy, says sify.com. It manages to entertain to an extent though there are some logic loopholes and silly scenes. The film is a harmless one-time watch for the fun element and few comic moments.

Several releases this week haven’t inspired any reviews yet. These include Kannada action drama Punyathgittiru, Malayalam drama Aniyankunjum Thannalayathu, Malayalam comedy drama Isakkinte Itihasam, Malayalam action thriller Seizer, Punjabi romantic drama Surkhi Bindi and Punjabi romantic drama Ishq My Religion.
