The Indian rupee ended 16 paise higher against US dollar on Friday amid strong gains in the domestic equity markets supported by foreign fund inflows. The local unit closed at 82.58 (provisional), up 14 paise as compared to the previous close of 82.74.

The US dollar index eased but remained on track for a third straight weekly gain. US President Joe Biden and top congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy are closing in on a deal, a US official told Reuters.

Meanwhile, global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.24 per cent to $76.44 a barrel.

On the domestic front, the Indian equity benchmark indices rallied over a percent Friday led by strong gains across sectors. The Sensex jumped 629.07 points, or 1.02%, to close at 62,501.69, while the Nifty ended 178.20 points, or 0.97%, higher at 18,499.35.

On Thursday, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) net bought Indian shares worth 589.10 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) net purchased Indian equities worth 338.44 crore.
