Markets stage sharp recovery; Sensex ends 1,325 points up, Nifty reclaims 10k

Market Closing

Indian stocks recovered sharply to close more than 4% higher on Friday after tumbling earlier in the session. The Nifty jumped 433 points to close at 10,023. The benchmark Sensex rose 1,325 points to end at 34,103.48.

Indian equity markets were shut for 45 minutes this morning after a 10% fall in major indices triggered the circuit breaker.

India's volatility index was up 10% after surging 44% to its highest in over a decade.

Among sectoral indices, BSE Metal – up nearly 6% -- was the biggest gainer, followed by BSE Oil & Gas, up 5.5%.

SBI & LIC may hold 55.56% stake in Yes Bank

State bank of India has submitted a proposal to the Cabinet under which the state owned lender along with Life Insurance Corporation of India will hold 55.56% stake in the cash strapped Yes bank. Of this, SBI will hold 45.74% and LIC will end up holding 9.81%. Private lenders including HDFC Ltd and ICICI bank Ltd will hold 6.31% each while Axis bank Ltd and Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd will hold 3.15% each.

Trading halted after 10% plunge trigger circuit breaker

The S&P BSE Sensex gauge plunged within minutes of opening on Friday, falling to 29,687.52, set for the lowest level since 2017. The suspension will last for 45 minutes. The NSE Nifty Index slumped to 8,624.05 in the nation’s first such halt since May 2009.

A further 15% slump on resumption of trading before 1 p.m. local time will trigger another halt lasting an hour and 45 minutes, according to exchange rules.

The market shall re-open, after index based market-wide circuit filter breach, with a pre-open call auction session.

Wall Street plummets

Wall Street tanked on Thursday, ending the longest-ever US bull market after new travel restrictions to curb the coronavirus outbreak spooked investors and rattled world markets.
