Nifty gives up gains to end lower; Sensex closes a tad higher

In a volatile session today, Nifty gave up gains made earlier in the day to close in the red, while Sensex managed to end higher though only marginally.

At close, the Sensex was up 62.45 points at 35,697.40, while Nifty was ended 0.02% lower at 10,448.90 points.

Yes Bank, Zee Entertainment, Bharti Infratel, Coal India, and Hero MotoCorp were among major gainers on the Nifty, while GAIL, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, IndusInd Bank and Bharat Petroleum lagged.

Tata Motors' stock hit its lowest level since September 2009. Yes Bank surged 30%.

The broader market remained subdued. The S&P BSE MidCap index fell 0.9% while the BSE SmallCap was down 0.4%.

In the wake of rapid spread of COVID-19 infections, the Union shipping ministry has said only those international cruise ships which had planned and intimated their call to an Indian Port not later than 1 January, 2020, will be allowed to call on ports.
