Markets Live: Sensex rises ahead of Modi's swearing-in ceremony

  • IT, banking and energy stocks led gains today
  • Fears of prolonged US-China trade war weigh on other Asian markets

Indian markets edged higher in early trade but weak global cues capped gains. The Sensex was up 60 points while Nifty edged higher to 11,876. Among the Sensex stocks, RIL and TCS were among the top gainers.

Asian markets track Wall Street lower

Asian stocks tracked Wall Street losses today as latest exchanges between Beijing and Washington signalled the heightened risk of a prolonged trade war, stoking investors' concerns about the impact on global economic growth. As investors switched out of equities safe-haven assets such as government bonds found favour, with yields on German benchmark debt approaching record lows.
