Sensex Today | Market Crash Highlights : Stocks struggled to maintain momentum in the wake of another record-breaking session on Wall Street, as a rally in Europe took a breather despite dovish comments from policy makers.
The Stoxx Europe 600 index was flat, with gains for retailers and utilities offsetting losses for healthcare and telecommunications stocks.
Futures on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 were little changed. Treasury yields ticked lower and a gauge of the dollar was steady.
Traders held on to Federal Reserve rate cut bets for this year even after US inflation came in higher than expected on Tuesday. The Fed is widely expected to hold interest rates steady for a fifth straight meeting when policymakers gather March 19-20. Much of the focus by investors will be on the Federal Open Market Committee’s quarterly forecasts for rates, including whether fresh employment and inflation figures have prompted any changes.
The European Central Bank is is also poised to start rate cuts soon, with Governing Council member Martins Kazaks saying on Wednesday reductions could come “within the next few meetings."
Bond yields across Europe ticked lower, with the German 10-year yield falling about three basis points to 2.31%.
Shares in mainland China fell, with Country Garden Holdings Co.’s missed bond payment weighing on developers. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index pulled back from the brink of a 20% surge from a recent low.
Japanese equities declined as Toyota Motor Corp. and a slew of other companies agreed to pay increases, adding to signs of a sustainable wage-price cycle that will support the Bank of Japan’s hawkish shift as early as next week. The yen fluctuated.
In other markets, oil advanced after four days of losses as an industry report pointed to shrinking US crude stockpiles, offsetting wavering OPEC cuts. Gold held a decline that snapped a record-breaking run of gains after the hotter-than-expected US inflation print.

Sensex Today Live : Elara Securities India gives an update on the Metals & Mining sector
Sensex Today Live : According to data from the World Steel Association (WSA), global crude steel production was under pressure for the second straight month, down ~2% YoY to ~148mn tonne in January.
This decline is primarily attributed to a fall of ~7% YoY in China’s production while the Rest of the World (ROW) was up ~4% YoY. However, there was a MoM recovery of ~8%, led by a surge of ~15% in China and ~2% in ROW.
In January, India’s crude steel production growth slowed to ~7% YoY vs double-digit growth in the range of 11-19% YoY during June-December 2023. On a MoM basis, growth stood at ~2%. As per provisional data, India’s crude steel production has grown ~14% YoY but fallen ~4% MoM in February, due to lower operational days.
Our view: flat steel pricing pressure to persist
We believe primary long steel prices are close to bottoming considering the spread between primary and secondary rebar has fallen below the long-term average and the recent uptick in thermal coal prices.
However, flat steel prices are expected to remain under pressure in CY24 on account of capacity ramp-up by NMDC and JSPL, inflow of imports and upcoming capacity additions by JSW Steel and Tata Steel.
Aluminum prices are likely to see support from less supply of bauxite from Guinea, the second-largest producing nation, due to nationwide strike by workers' associations.

Sensex Today Live : Sudeep Shah, DVP and Head of Technical and Derivative Research Desk, SBI Securities, gives technical view on the Nifty 50 for today
Sensex Today Live : "Nifty 50’s 10-20 EMA (Exponential Moving Average) zone of 22,200 - 22,300 will act as a crucial support zone while resistance of 22,410 needs to be crossed and sustained for a fresh leg on the upside upto 22,550 - 22,600.
Bank Nifty’s 20-Day EMA zone of 46,900 did act as a support, and we expect 46,900 - 47,000 to continue acting as a strong support going forward. Till 46,900 holds, the sentiments could be Buy on dips and gradually Bank Nifty could inch up higher upto 47,700 - 47.800.
A sustainable move above 47,800 could lead to the Indices moving upto 48,100 - 48,200. While on the downside, breach of 46,900 would lead to further profit booking upto 46,500 - 46,300 zone.

Sensex Today Live : Kush Gupta, Director at SKG– Investments & Advisory, view on SME IPOs amid SEBI's strict comments in the space ahead of the KP Green engineering IPO
Sensex Today Live : "SME IPOs have seen a stellar run in 2023 with close to 180 listings, but going forward we are expecting consolidation in this space. Like any other investment cycle, super-normal profits are followed by saturation and investors get cautious. But the vision with which the SME IPO market started is far from achieved, it’s a great platform for good profitable companies to tap into capital for growth. With an increase in equity participation across, SMEs provide a new opportunity for investors to diversify thereby bridging the demand-supply gap.
SEBI’s protective stance is valid in the interest of investor protection, which is their primary mission. SME is not a space for risk-averse and less informed investors. There are some valid concerns over valuation that will normalise with some profit booking and correction which is important for sustained growth. It will only create stability and reshape this sector to absorb more capital and increase investor confidence. As for IPOs, they may not enjoy the massive over-subscription that they have in 2023 but we see no reason to believe that their required capital raise will not be fulfilled in the current scenario."

Sensex Today Live : Manish Chowdhury, Head of Research of StoxBox says, ITC shares could come under pressure after British American Tobacco sold upto 3.5% stake in ITC
Sensex Today Live : "We believe that shares of ITC could be under pressure in the near term amid a large supply of shares after an expected 3.5% stake sale by British American Tobacco (BAT). A near term top seems to be in place around Rs. 500-odd levels which happened just before the announcement of the demerger of the hotel business into a new entity in August 2023. However, we remain constructive on the company from a medium to long term perspective owing to its strong brand recall and enormous runway for its FMCG business ahead. With inflation expected to moderate further ahead, especially the rural side, we expect volumes in the overall business to come back as we move forward. At the current valuation, we believe that most of the negatives are already priced in and investors could start considering adding the stock to their portfolio at every dip."

Sensex Today Live : February inflation remains steady at 5.1% but food inflation up
Sensex Today Live : In February, Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation declined by one basis point to 5.09%, compared to 5.1% in January 2024. This information was reported by the statistics ministry on Tuesday.
Despite this slight decrease, February inflation remained above the central bank’s target of 4%, but still within its tolerance range of 2-6% for the sixth consecutive month. Notably, prices of food and beverages continued to rise, remaining above 7% for four consecutive months. This upward trend was driven by increases in the prices of eggs, meat, fish, and vegetables. However, other primary categories such as clothing, footwear, housing, and transport experienced marginal easing.
In comparison, in February 2023, inflation had exceeded the upper tolerance band, reaching 6.44%. Subsequently, inflation rates stood at 5.5% in November 2023 (up from 4.87% in October) and 5.02% in September 20231. The economic landscape continues to evolve, and policymakers closely monitor these fluctuations to make informed decisions. (Read the full story here.)
