Sensex Today Live : SME IPOs: A gateway to emerging market opportunities

Sensex Today Live : In March 2012, a significant transformation occurred in the Indian equity market. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) took proactive measures and introduced a series of modifications to the listing norms for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

SMEs, which constitute more than 90% of all businesses in India, essentially represent the country's middle class.

These regulatory amendments enhanced their integration into the financial ecosystem, offering them a chance to increase their equity and tap into India's expanding investor base. (Read the full story here.)

Sensex Today Live : Kotal Institutional Equities gives update on Banks, says they are "stable and not too exciting"; adds that the sector remains attractive

Sensex Today Live : RBI’s recent data on housing loan growth (~40% yoy) incorporates the recent merger of HDFC Ltd with the bank, which would make it challenging to compare with earlier quarters.

The sequential growth is similar between public and private banks.

We see a comfortable mix between average increase in loan ticket size and volumes driving loan growth.

We continue to see greater traction in higher ticket-size loans. Overall, we should see a stable performance on housing loans.

Key metrics are showing stable signs of business performance

RBI’s recent data on housing loans shows the following:

(1) Loan growth of 40% yoy led by ~22% volume growth and ~15% yoy growth in average ticket size. Growth is higher due to merger of HDFC Ltd with HDFC Bank. The sequential numbers would not be a good representation given the seasonality of the underlying business.

(2) The share of public and private banks is similar at ~50%.

(3) 80% of the housing loans are in the Rs1-10 mn ticket size by value.

(4) The top seven states contribute ~70% of the overall housing loans with Maharashtra contributing 30% of the overall loans. Overall, there are stable trends on most operating metrics.

Sensex Today Live : Kotal Institutional Equities says vehicle finance NBFCs can look forward to a good year

Sensex Today Live : Product diversification and income buoyancy will support NII growth in FY2025E, even as vehicle volumes may remain subdued and cost of borrowings may remain elevated.

We do not find any red flags on asset quality, though trends in credit cost trends may be mixed.

We believe that loan growth moderation (17-24% in FY2025E) from current elevated levels reduces the risk of overheating and bodes well for all stakeholders.

We find upgrades in Chola (upgrade to BUY from ADD; FV of Rs1,350) and Shriram Finance (FV increased to Rs2,850 from Rs2,500; BUY), but remain a bit watchful on trends at Mahindra Finance (ADD; FV of Rs310, up from Rs305).

We upgrade Chola (after a 25% correction in the past 1.5 months) to BUY; it is a well-run multi-product NBFC model, with stable performance over cycles and unblemished track record after the exit of DBS (2009) will command rich valuations.

We roll over (with some upgrades) the FV of Shriram Finance to Rs2,850 (from 2,500, include Rs45 of HFC), as we continue to expect the earnings upgrade cycle to continue.

We reiterate ADD on Mahindra Finance with FV of Rs310.

We expect Chola to deliver 23% loan book and earnings CAGR during FY2025-27E, translating to 19% RoE.

Shriram Finance has bettered expectations, after guidance of mid-teen growth and RoE during merger.

At high ECL coverage of 6.2% in 9MFY24, we find tailwinds to credit costs for the company.

Mahindra Finance will likely deliver 23% loan growth in FY2024E, followed by 20% growth over the next two years.

ECL coverage (down to 3.8% from peak of 4.5-7.2% in FY2020-22) provides low room for reduction, especially due to seasonal volatility in GNPLs.

It appears relatively weak in the space; ADD with FV of Rs310 (1.7X book, up from 305).

Sensex Today Live : Why Sebi is worried about small-cap mutual fund schemes

Sensex Today Live : Regulatory bodies are perpetually wary of market fluctuations, potential fraudulent activities, asset price inflation, and market collapses. This concern intensifies especially on the brink of general elections, as unfavorable market conditions can lead to significant embarrassment.

In the past few months, regulators in India have adopted a proactive approach: they have enforced strict limitations on unsecured loans by fintech companies and have taken disciplinary action against Paytm Bank and JM Financial.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), the market regulator, shares this concern. In a letter dated 27 February, Sebi issued a warning to asset management companies (AMCs) regarding the persistent inflow into small- and mid-cap mutual fund schemes, despite the evident overvaluation in these market segments. Sensex Today Live : Foreign investors tap small and mid-cap firms to seek the next winners in booming Indian stock market

Sensex Today Live : Foreign investors seeking to enhance their returns in India's thriving stock market are increasingly investing in small- and mid-cap firms that are outperforming their larger counterparts.

The count of companies with overseas shareholding exceeding 10% escalated to 275 on the BSE 500 Index at the end of December, up from 257 the previous year, as per a Bloomberg analysis of foreign institutional ownership data. This surge was primarily driven by smaller firms.

The quest to identify the upcoming victors in the world's most rapidly expanding major economy is leading international funds to delve deeper into the market-cap hierarchy. This has contributed to the enthusiasm that has powered a continuous rally in this sector. A measure of small- and mid-cap stocks has yielded a 60% return over the past year, in contrast to a 23% rise in India's primary S&P BSE Sensex Index. (Read the full story here.)

Sensex Today Live : Global cues, Gift Nifty firm up, indicating the bull run to continue

Sensex Today Live : With global cues firming up on the back of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's commentary on rate cuts this year, the Gift Nifty was trading ahead of Nifty 50's Wednesday close.

At 7:50 am on Thursday, the Gift Nifty was at 22,650, nearly 200 points ahead of Nifty 50's Wednesday close of 22,474,05. This comes in the backdrop of both the benchmark indices in India hitting new all-time highs in Wednesday's trading session.

Wall Street followed world shares to a higher close on Wednesday and the benchmark U.S. Treasury yield dipped to a one-month low after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reassured investors that while inflation is not quite tamed rate cuts can be expected this year.

All three major U.S. stock indexes closed well below session highs, marking a partial rebound from Tuesday's steep sell-off. The tech-heavy Nasdaq enjoyed the most robust gain.

Powell told the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee that "if the economy evolves broadly as expected," the central bank can be expected to cut its policy rate this year. He added that continued progress against inflation "was not assured."

European stocks hit a record high as investors weighed Powell's commentary the day before the European Central Bank is expected to issue its policy decision.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 75.86 points, or 0.2%, to 38,661.05, the S&P 500 gained 26.11 points, or 0.51%, to 5,104.76 and the Nasdaq Composite added 91.96 points, or 0.58%, to 16,031.54.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.39% and MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe gained 0.59%.

Emerging market stocks rose 0.67%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan closed 0.78% higher, while Japan's Nikkei lost 0.02%.

Bitcoin, which touched and then backed away from an all-time high on Tuesday, resumed its climb.

The cryptocurrency was last up 5.6% at $66,884.
