Market Close Highlights : World stocks snapped a three-day winning streak on Thursday as disappointing forecasts from Facebook and Instagram parent Meta hammered tech, while the yen's drop through 155 per dollar for the first time since 1990 kept FX traders on intervention alert.
Both U.S. Q1 GDP data and more 'Big Tech' earnings were scheduled for later in the day but for now it was Meta's 15% after-hours price slump that was souring the mood.
Japan's tech-heavy Nikkei slid 2% in Asian trading and European tech stocks were down 0.8% in early dealing as traders did pretty much the opposite to the previous day after Tesla had promised new models by early next year.
In an earnings-packed week, tech bellwethers are in the spotlight, with Alphabet, Microsoft and Intel also due to report on Thursday.
European earnings and M&A deals were flooding in too.
London's FTSE 100 hit another record high as UK-listed miner Anglo American surged 11% on a buyout offer from Aussie rival BHP, while Deutsche Bank slipped and BNP Paribas edged up after the euro zone's biggest lenders posted upbeat first-quarter profits.
Beyond corporate earnings, investor focus will be on the first quarter U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) data due out later.
Recent hotter-than-expected inflation reports have pushed back and reduced expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts, with markets now pricing in roughly a 70% chance of a first reduction in September. They are not even fully convinced there will now be another one this year, having expected around six cuts at the start of the year.
The shifting expectations of U.S. rates have lifted Treasury yields and the dollar, casting a shadow on the currency market. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar was little changed at 105.75.
In the commodity markets, U.S. crude rose 0.1% to $82.89 per barrel and Brent was at $88.13, up 0.12% on the day. Gold, which hit a record high earlier this month, inched up to $2,326 an ounce.

Sensex Today Live : Anand Rathi Research Team recommends to 'ACCUMULATE' Jupiter Wagons with a TP of ₹500
Sensex Today Live : CMP : ₹416
Target: ₹500
Upside : 20.19%
"Recently we observed that there was some strong buying in most of the railway related stocks since past few session. Most of the stock including JUPITER WAGONS confirmed a range breakout. With regards to JWL, there are multiple breakouts, and the price action resembles a bullish Cup and Handle pattern. Thus, we advise traders to accumulate the stock in the range of ₹418 - ₹414 with a stop loss of ₹370 (daily closing basis) for an upside target of ₹500."
Sensex Today Live : Elara Securities India recommends to 'REDUCE' Hindustan Unilever
Sensex Today Live : Hindustan Unilever Rating: REDUCE
Target Price : INR 2320
Upside : 3%
CMP : ₹2,260 (as on 24 April 2024)
Volume growth subdued; premium portfolio outperformed
We pare 25E/26E earnings 2.7%/2.9% to factor in lower-than-expected revenue growth and margin. We reiterate Reduce with TP trimmed to ₹2,320 (from ₹2,600), as we assign 45x (from 50x on near-term challenges) on FY26E P/E. Key risk to our call is increase in input prices, which could aid in price-led growth and market share gains from regional players.
Sensex Today Live : Elara Securities India recommends to 'ACCUMULATE' Tata Consumer Products, says margin expansion on the anvil
Sensex Today Live : Tata Consumer Products Rating: ACCUMULATE
Target Price : ₹1,200
Upside : 8%
CMP : ₹1,110 (as on 24 April 2024)
We cut FY25E/26E earnings estimates slightly by 2%/1% to factor in a tad lower revenue growth outlook. So, we pare SOTP-TP to ₹1,200 (from ₹1,246) as we assign 50x FY26E P/E to the India business (unchanged) and 25x FY26E P/E to the international business. Maintain Accumulate – We favor TATACONS as it offers visibility on double-digit sales growth and margin expansion, in the long term.
Sensex Today Live : Jinesh Joshi, Research Analyst - Institutional Equities at Prabhudas Lilladher, says PVR-INOX's decision to reduce ads and increase number of shows may not work "when content itself is not clicking"
Sensex Today Live : Jinesh Joshi, Research Analyst - Institutional Equities at Prabhudas Lilladher, says patrons in premium formats are time conscious and hence the idea to cut down on ad-time appears sensible. However, this is a chicken and egg situation, he says. "Content and ad-revenue is inter-linked. If you have good content, ad-revenue increases as eyeballs rise and vice-versa."
In current scenario, when content is weak, ad-revenue is bound to suffer. It is pertinent to note that even in FY24E, PVR-Inox’s ad-revenue will be lower than pre-COVID base of ₹554 crore. "Thus, it remains to be seen if cutting down on ad-time and making way for more shows bears fruit when content itself is not clicking (albeit temporarily), Joshi says.
"We maintain our view that there are no near term triggers in the stock given weak content pipeline. Retain ACCMULATE with a TP of ₹1,663 but expect back ended returns."

Sensex Today Live : Amnish Aggarwal, Director-Research-Institutional Equities at Prabhudas Lilladher recommends to 'ACCUMULATE' Hindustan Unilever, for moderate returns
Sensex Today Live : Rating: ACCUMULATE | CMP: ₹2,260 | TP: ₹2,543
We cut FY25/26EPS by 1.6/1.3% factoring in 1) slower than expected recovery in volumes in rural India; 2) price cuts in personal wash and skin care to improve consumer price value equation; 3) sustained competitive intensity across mass segment in HPC segment resulting in market share loss; and 4) higher investments in A&P and innovations to sustain LT growth.
We believe normal monsoon can provide flip to rural demand although margin expansion from current levels will be very moderate (50bps over FY24-26). Long-term growth levers led by higher growth in Ecom and categories of future (liquids, Green Tea, premium skincare, etc.) and premium segments remains intact.
We estimate 8% PAT CAGR over FY24-26 and assign DCF based target price of ₹2543 ( ₹2600 earlier). Risk reward looks favourable post little returns in last 4 years; however, significant re-rating looks unlikely given valuations at 44.6xFY26 and market momentum in favour of cyclicals. We upgrade the stock to Accumulate (Hold earlier) for moderate returns over next 12-15 months.

Sensex was down 278.77 points, or 0.38%, at 73,574.17 and Nifty was down 87.50 points, or 0.39%, at 22,314.90 during pre-open.
Sensex Today Live : Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities, says bullish sentiment prevails for Nifty, Bank Nifty and some specific stocks in pre-opening market comment
Sensex Today Live : "US stock futures are taking a sharp dive on Thursday morning, spurred by Meta Platforms' substantial 15% stock price plummet following a disappointing revenue outlook. While a sluggish volatility index hints at hopes for stability in the upcoming elections and geopolitical tensions, concerns linger over escalating conflicts in the Middle East, albeit tempered by a drop in oil prices. All eyes are on Friday's inflation report amid the Federal Reserve's data-dependent stance. In the Indian market, FIIs turned net sellers while DIIs made purchases. Attention is also focused on the release of Q4 earnings, with bullish sentiments prevailing for Nifty, Bank Nifty, and specific stocks like CUMMINS."

Sensex Today Live : Why is Indian stock market expected to open lower in trade on April 25; Explained
Sensex Today Live : The Indian stock market's key indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are anticipated to commence trading on a lower note on Thursday, influenced by unfavorable cues from the global markets. The Gift Nifty trends also suggest a negative opening for the Indian benchmark index, trading around the 22,350 level, nearly 60 points below the previous close of Nifty futures.
The Nifty 50 chart showed a small negative candle with a minor upper shadow. "Technically, this pattern suggests a range-bound movement in the market around 22,450 - 22,500 levels. As Nifty is currently near the crucial overhead resistance of the previous opening downside gap of 15th April around 22,500 levels, there is a higher possibility of a decisive upside breakout of the said resistance in the near term, as long as Nifty doesn't show any sharp decline from near the key resistance," stated Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst, HDFC Securities. He believes that the short-term trend of Nifty is range-bound with a positive bias. (Read the full story here.)
