Sensex Today Live Updates : Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) net bought Indian equities worth 1,613.24 crore on May 31, while domestic institutional investors bought equities worth 2,114.17 crore the last day of the month.

Sensex Today Live Updates : Indian shares set records, the rupee gained and bond yields dropped on Monday as exit polls indicated a decisive mandate and a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with investors eying public spending to maintain economic momentum.

The broader Nifty index rose as much as 3.59% to a record 23,338.70 points while the BSE index surged 3.76% to a lifetime peak of 76,738.89. By 0830 GMT, the markets had pulled back slightly and were trading up around 3% each.

The Nifty and BSE index have both nearly doubled in value since their close a day before election results in 2019.

The benchmark 10-year government bond yield touched 6.9421%, its lowest since April 8, 2022, falling 4 basis points from its previous close. The rupee strengthened to as much as 82.9575, its highest since March 19.

The 10-year edged up to 6.96% while the rupee was trading at 83.13 by 0830 GMT.

Weekend exit polls projected the alliance led by Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to increase its 303 seats in the 543-member lower house and likely get a two-thirds majority - enough to initiate amendments to the constitution.

A win had been widely expected but, if confirmed in the official results, the margin will be larger than analyst forecasts and will be seen as a positive for equity markets that have scaled record highs on the back of economic growth.

European stocks bounced and government bond yields dropped on Monday as investors looked forward to an interest rate cut from the European Central Bank (ECB), while U.S. jobs data kept the focus squarely on inflation.

The pan-European STOXX index was up 0.6% by 0850 GMT, while U.S. stock futures also rose.

In bond markets, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was down 4 basis points to 4.47% and German yields, which touched six-month highs last week, also dropped.

All focus was on the ECB, which is considered almost certain to trim rates by a quarter point to 3.75% on Thursday, which would make it the first major central bank to cut rates this cycle.

However a surprisingly high reading for euro zone inflation, out last week, further weakened the case for a rapid round of reductions. Markets now price in fewer than 60 basis points of easing now - meaning two 25-basis point cuts and less than a 50% chance of a third.

China's factory activity grew at the fastest pace in about two years in May, data showed on Monday. That extended the optimism prevailing in markets following Friday figures showing the U.S. Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation held steady in April.

Markets also imply around an 80% chance the Bank of Canada will cut at its meeting on Wednesday and around 60 basis points of easing this year, though analysts are hopeful the easing will be even deeper.

Investors are a lot less dovish on the Fed, seeing little prospect of a move until September, though the odds of a move then increased after Friday's inflation data. They price in only a 50% chance of a second cut by December.

The outlook could change this week given data due includes key surveys on services and manufacturing, and the May payrolls report in which unemployment is seen holding at 3.9% as 190,000 net new jobs are created.

In Europe, focus was also on a downgrade to France's credit rating by Standard & Poor's, but the country's bonds showed little reaction.

Emerging markets were in focus, with India's rupee strengthening and the Mexican peso weakening following exit poll results from general elections in both countries.

Asian stocks rose on the back of the strong Chinese data, along with prints from Japan and South Korea, while Indian stocks hit record highs.

Gold was steady at $2,327 an ounce, having now rallied for four months in a row helped in part by buying from central banks and China.

Oil prices see-sawed after OPEC agreed on Sunday to extend most of its oil output cuts into 2025, though some cuts will start to be unwound from October 2024 onwards. Brent was last up 0.3% to $81.35 a barrel, while U.S. crude was up similarly to $77.21 per barrel.

Sensex Today Live : Closing Bell Wrap

Sensex Today Live : Indian benchmark indices closed at record highs on Monday, fuelled by a broadbased rally in stocks, primary among them being public sector banks, financial services, oil and gas companies, and realty stocks.

The markets were led higher on Monday on optimism about the incumbent BJP government coming back to power as indicated by the various exit polls for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Apart from that, better than expected GDP print for FY24 and other positive global cues added to the positive momentum on wednesday.

Suman Bannerjee, CIO of Hedonova, said, "The markets are riding a wave of optimism, propelled by the exit polls suggesting a decisive win for the NDA government, reflecting the sentiment driving the surge to an all-time high of 23,122. The upcoming election results could sustain this rally if the NDA wins, while any surprises might trigger volatility".

Sensex, which had opened at a record high of 76,583.29, climbed further to touch 76,738.89 in intraday trades, which is the 30-stock index's fresh all-time high. At close, the Sensex had pared some of the gains, to close at 76,468.78, up 2,507.47 points, or 3.39%.

Similarly, the Nifty 50, which had also opened at a record high of 23,337.90, created a fresh-all-time high by climbing to 23,338.70. At close, the 50-stock index was at 23,263.90, up 733.20 points, or 3.25%.

Three stocks, Sun Pharma, HCLTech, and Asian Paints, out of the 30 on the BSE Sensex ended in the red, while SBI, NTPC, Power Grid Corp., Larsen & Turbo, and Reliance Industries, were the top gainers for the day.

Meanwhile, seven out of the 50 stocks on the Nifty 50 index ended in the red. Eicher Motors, LTIMindtree, HCLTech, Sun Pharma, and Asian Paints, were the top drags, while Adani Ports and SEZ, SBI, NTPC, Power Grid Corp., and ONGC were the top gainers.

The broader market also ended in the green, with the BSE SmallCap index gaining 2.05% and the BSE MidCap index climbing 3.54%.

That apart, all the sectoral indices ended in the green, with the PSU Bank index in the lead, having gained 8.40%, followed by the Oil & Gas index, which was up 6.81%.

The Bank and Financial Services indices had both gained more than 4% each, while the Realty index had gained 5.95%.

Regarding Tuesday's session, which would coincide with the counting of votes for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and the future outlook of the markets, Paras Matalia, Fund Manager and Head of Equity Research at SAMCO Mutual Fund, said, "The election results will come out tomorrow and looking at last 2 NDA wins, they have usually beaten most exit poll results. If that happens this time too, markets might see further upside, especially the PSUs and sectors like defence, power, manufacturing and renewable energy benefitting from government's focus. Investors should stay invested although with caution now, as valuations have become pricier".

Further, a research note from Elara Securities India, stated, " For the next five years, we expect rail freight, maritime, urban housing, urban infrastructure, new energy, efficiency capex in power and GST reforms to be the new emerging growth areas".

Sensex Today Live : Vikram Kasat, Head of Advisory at Prabhudas Lilladher, says the market mantra has changed from 'BUY THE DIP' last month, to 'RIDE THE WAVE' in June

Sensex Today Live : "I have witnessed bulls being slaughtered and taken to the cleaners in 2008 and 2009. This time around, a similar fate could await the bears. Most on the street were pessimistic about Modi Ji's chances or were sitting on the sidelines. Now, very few will have the courage to participate on the upside. People will continue to clamor for a correction, but I believe every dip will be bought into. The month of June could be a defining one for the Bulls, so one should make the most of this opportunity and stay a bit greedy. Last month, I kept saying "BUY THE DIP"; this month's slogan is going to be "RIDE THE WAVE." More power to Modi Ji !!!?

Sensex Today Live : India’s 8.2% GDP growth: We still have a long way to go

Sensex Today Live : The National Statistical Office (NSO) released the gross domestic product (GDP) estimates on May 31, 2024, revealing an impressive growth rate of 8.2% for the fiscal year 2023-24. This figure significantly outpaces the most optimistic predictions by brokerages and exceeds the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) estimate of 7% as of December 2023.

While these numbers may undergo revisions in the coming months, it is almost certain that the GDP deflator’s computation and the year’s net tax behavior have contributed to this increase in economic output. The GDP, calculated as gross value added plus taxes less subsidies, has shown a remarkable surge. (Read the full story here.)

Sensex Today Live : Exit poll 2024 frenzy could be followed by profit booking after results, focus to shift on Budget, say experts

Sensex Today Live : Indian stock market indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, hit record highs on Monday, June 3, surging nearly 4% each. The surge was driven by the prospects of political stability and policy continuity, following the exit polls’ prediction of a decisive victory for the BJP-led NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The exit polls released on Saturday, June 1, projected that the NDA could secure between 350-370 seats. Despite the possibility of actual results varying from these predictions, experts opine that the formation of a non-NDA government is highly unlikely. (Read the full story here.)

Sensex Today Live : Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services, says with DIIs, HNIs and retail turning buyers, short covering will add to the momentum

Sensex Today Live : "Fundamentals, technicals and sentiments turning favourable at the same time are rare in the market. This is what has happened now. The market went into the big event, elections, very light with Nifty correcting around 600 points from the May highs. Profit booking also happened on a large scale. The short position in the market also is high.

All these are going to change dramatically. DIIs, HNIs, retail ...are all going to turn buyers. Short-covering can add to the momentum.

The rally is likely to be led by largecaps. Stocks like RIL, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Bank, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, L & T, M&M, Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Eicher Motors are fundamentally strong largecaps with potential to lead the rally. IT stocks like TCS, Infy, HCL Tech, Coforge, Persistent and L&T Tech offer contrarian buying opportunities.

The GDP numbers which came on Friday were better than expected with 8.2% growth. This will provide fundamental support to the market. S&P’s upward revision of India’s rating outlook also is positive."
