Rupee appreciates below 82 per dollar amid strong rally in equities, inflow hopes

Indian rupee made sharp gains against the US dollar on Friday, appreciating to a one-month high. The currency even erased the 82 mark! If the gains continue, then it could be the best week in a month for the rupee. The upside in the local currency is backed by strong foreign funds flow, positive Asian peers, and a slide down in the greenback. Also, a strong rally in domestic equities further uplifted the sentiment in the rupee.

At the time of writing, the rupee was trading at 81.9750 against the US dollar up by 0.75% from the previous print. The local unit has touched a high of at least 81.925 in the intraday trade. This would be its best performance since February 2nd. At the latest level, the current week's gains come to around 1.2% in the rupee. (Read More)

Kotak Securities on Residential Real Estate Sector: . Valuations for residential developers are at 5-year lows as the fear of rising interest rates and its potential impact on residential demand has led to weak stock performance

Pankaj Kumar, Research Analyst, Vice President – PCG Research, Kotak Securities Ltd: Residential real estate continues with its strong showing, with sales of 22.9 cr sq. ft in Q3FY23, increased 15% yoy, marking the strongest quarterly sales. Sales continued to outpace launches and outstanding inventory across the country reduced to ~1.5 years (based on 12 month trailing sales). There were some pockets of weakness, with Bengaluru reporting a 2% yoy decline in sales and the NCR flat yoy. There was mixed performance from the listed players, but most of the players remain on track to achieve/surpass their sales targets for FY23. Improving sales, market share gains for organized developers and rising real estate prices augur well for listed real estate developers. Valuations for residential developers are at 5-year lows as the fear of rising interest rates and its potential impact on residential demand has led to weak stock performance. We highlight that empirical data on residential sales suggest little correlation of demand with interest rates. We note that among our coverage, Lodha, Sobha and Prestige offer maximum upside on account of de-rating of multiples.

No proposal as of now to increase sugar export quota from 60 lakh tonnes: Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra

The government is not considering any proposal as of now to increase the sugar export quota from the present 60 lakh tonnes for this marketing year ending September, Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said.

The food ministry has allowed 60 lakh tonnes of sugar exports for the current 2022-23 marketing year (October-September).

The country had exported around 110 lakh tonnes, an all-time high, of sugar in the 2021-22 marketing year.

"The sugar production is going down by about 9 lakh tonnes, that is our estimate from the previous year. So keeping that in view, as of now there is no proposal to increase the export quota," Chopra said on the sidelines of an event on Thursday late evening.

When asked that the ministry was to assess domestic production this month before deciding on further exports of sweetener, he said, "The production figures have come down. We have to see this buffer stock requirement first. And once that is met, then only we can take a call."

The secretary asserted that "as of now there are no proposals for any further export quota." (PTI)

Power Crunch Fears in India Push NTPC to Seek Spot Market Coal

NTPC Ltd., India’s largest power producer, is making a rare move to buy domestic coal in the spot market, underscoring rising concerns about a potential squeeze on summer energy supply.

The state-owned generator plans to issue a tender for 3 million tons in the next week or so, according to people familiar with the plan, who asked not to be named as the information isn’t yet public.

NTPC didn’t immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

India is bracing for another summer of grueling heat that’s likely to push power demand to a record and pressure the country’s grid, which relies on coal for about 70% of electricity generation. Weather officials have already warned there’s a higher probability of extreme temperatures in coming months, stoking worries about a repeat of the deadly heat waves last year.

NTPC, which largely relies on contracted volumes from Coal India Ltd., also wants to boost competition and encourage its major supplier to improve quality by adding alternative sources among private mines that are entering production, the people said. (Bloomberg)

Gold eyes best week since mid-Jan as traders gauge U.S. rate hike path

Gold prices rose on Friday and looked set to post their biggest weekly gain since mid-January, as the U.S. dollar eased, while traders assessed prospects of further rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.

Spot gold was up 0.2% at $1,839.39 per ounce, as of 0550 GMT, rising about 1.6% so far in the week. U.S. gold futures rose 0.2% to $1,844.80.

Interest rate hikes to contain high inflation discourage investors from placing money in non-yielding assets such as gold.

"There's been a little bit of position-squaring ahead of what is the main event risk left for the week, which is a bunch of different Fedspeak and the services ISM number," said Ilya Spivak, head of global macro at Tastylive. (Reuters)

Geojit Finance Services: The market will continue to be under pressure from FII selling which yesterday was ₹2676 crores excluding the GQG bulk buying of Adani stocks

Dr V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services: The US-based investment firm GQG partners investing 15446 crores in four Adani stocks might influence the market positively. This money is mainly to be used for retiring debt, which means that the banks that had funded Adani companies will not face any stress. This is positive news for Bank Nifty. However, the market will continue to be under pressure from FII selling which yesterday was 2676 crores excluding the GQG bulk buying of Adani stocks. The US 10-year yield has moved above 4 percent. FIIs can be expected to sell more since this risk-free return is quite attractive considering the muted expectations from the equity markets in the short-term. FII selling will be an opportunity for long-term investors to accumulate high quality stocks, particularly in banking.

India commercial paper rates may rise further as liquidity dries up - analysts

Indian companies may have to spend more to raise short-term funds via commercial papers as liquidity tightens further and government borrowings of similar tenure increase, analysts said.

Short-term rates, which have been edging higher since the Reserve Bank of India started raising rates last year, have already hit their highest level in over four years because the liquidity deficit in the banking system is seen widening and the government has stepped up borrowing via treasury bills at the end of the financial year.

Earlier this week, state-run financial institution NABARD raised three-month funds at 7.65%, which was over 40 basis points higher than what it paid for a similar paper a month ago.

Shadow lenders Bajaj Finance, Aditya Birla Finance and Tata Capital Financial, which are regular issuers, paid 7.84%-7.90% for a three-month paper, up 20-30 bps in the last two weeks. These rates are at the highest level since October-November 2018. (Reuters)

INDIA BONDS-India bond yields may rise as U.S. peers stay elevated

Indian government bond yields are expected to rise marginally early on Friday, as their U.S. counterparts continue to remain elevated, while states come up with yet another heavy borrowing plan for next week.

The 10-year benchmark 7.26% 2032 bond yield is expected to remain in the 7.42%-7.47% band, after closing higher at 7.4386% on Thursday, a trader with a private bank said.

With the 10-year U.S. yield consistently remaining above the 4% mark, local bonds should continue to see bearish pressure, the trader said.

The 10-year U.S. yield touched 4.09%, its highest in four months on Thursday, reinforcing concerns that the Federal Reserve will need to raise interest rates further.

The two-year yield, which is a closer indicator of interest rate expectations, jumped to 4.94%.

Data from Europe had already pushed U.S. government bond yields higher as stickier-than-expected euro zone inflation numbers supported bets that rates would go higher and stay there for longer. (Reuters)

Officials told Reuters that in a letter that was sent in February, the Ministry of Mines said, that the government was "kept in the dark" about the deal.

According to the official, the proposed deal between Hindustan Zinc and Vedanta has jeopardized the government's plans for divesting its stake in the former as investors have turned jittery leading to a drop in the HZL's share price. (Read More)

Short circuit’: After SEBI ban, Arshad Warsi claims to have zero knowledge about stocks

Arshad Warsi and wife Maria Goretti have been implicated in a case related to misleading videos posted on YouTube channels that encouraged investors to buy shares in Sadhna Broadcast, a company accused of price manipulation.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has banned several entities, including Warsi, Goretti, YouTuber Manish Mishra and promoters of Sadhna Broadcast, from the securities market. According to SEBI, Warsi profited 29.43 lakh and Goretti earned a profit of 37.56 lakh from the scheme.

SEBI has issued two interim ex-parte orders that have restrained 29 individuals from buying, selling, or dealing in securities either directly or indirectly until further orders. The orders are related to pump-and-dump schemes, which refer to the practice of artificially inflating share prices by encouraging investors to buy shares in a company and then selling one's own shares while the prices are high. Adani family sells stake in four group cos

The Adani Family, through its trust, sold 15,446 crore worth of its stake in four group companies to US-based investment firm GQG Partners, founded by investment manager Rajiv Jain. The transaction will provide much-needed respite to the conglomerate’s promoters and its stocks, which have plummeted since the release of a US short-sellers report alleging stick manipulation and accounting fraud, said fund managers.

The share sales, involving Adani Ports, Adani Green Energy, Adani Transmission and Adani Enterprises, were done through a series of secondary block transactions, the group said in a statement to the stock exchanges. Earlier on Thursday, Adani Enterprises officially denied news reports from a day earlier of having secured a $3 billion credit line from a sovereign wealth fund. Only a month ago, Adani Enterprises pulled its 20,000 crore follow-on public offering, which had a floor price of 3,112 apiece, as a fallout from the Hindenburg Research report. GQG’s acquisition price of Adani Enterprises at 1,410.86 on Thursday was at a 10% discount to Wednesday’s closing price. Shares of Adani Enterprises rallied 2.75% after the deal, while Adani Ports gained 3.45%, and Adani Green and Adani Transmission rose to hit the 5% upper circuit at closing. (Read More)

US stocks climb on Thursday to send Wall Street to first gain in 3 days

Stocks rose Thursday for their first gain in three days, even as bond yields climbed to tighten the squeeze on Wall Street.

The S&P 500 rose 29.96 points, or 0.8%, to 3,981.35 after erasing a morning loss. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 341.73, or 1%, to 33,003.57, while the Nasdaq composite gained 83.50, or 0.7%, to 11,462.98.

Stocks flipped from losses to gains after a Federal Reserve official made comments that raised hopes the central bank may not ramp up its fight against inflation as aggressively as feared. That countered recent talk from other officials who raised worries about much bigger increases to interest rates following several hotter-than-expected reports on the economy.

Raphael Bostic, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, told reporters that for now he still supports lifting the Fed's key overnight rate to a range of 5% to 5.25%, up from its current 4.50% to 4.75%. That's lower than a good chunk of investors on Wall Street are forecasting.

“That’s what gave the market a little hope, that there is a voice not saying to raise the terminal rate," or where the Fed will ultimately stop hiking rates, said Brent Schutte, chief investment officer at Northwestern Mutual Wealth, “because a lot of the other people who talk seem like they’re constantly saying: ‘Elevator Up.’"

Higher rates can drive down inflation because they slow the economy, but they also raise the risk of a recession down the line. They likewise hurt prices for stocks and other investments. (AP)
