European stocks extend winning streak

European stocks were steady near record highs on the back of an earnings season that showed companies were deleveraging and weathering the supply-side crisis.

The Stoxx 600 Europe Index inched higher after six weeks of gains that marked its longest weekly winning streak since mid-April. S&P 500 futures edged higher with Nasdaq 100 contracts. Bonds across Europe rose with U.S. Treasuries.

Strong corporate earnings are helping drive investors into rallying markets and overshadowing fears about the hottest U.S. inflation print in three decades. The sentiment found its way into calmer bond markets, where these fears had played out in the highest volatility since the onset of pandemic.

UK expands Covid-19 booster program to people aged 40 and over: Bloomberg

15 Nov 2021, 03:10:48 PM IST

Market view: Narendra Solanki, Head- Equity Research (Fundamental), Anand Rathi Shares & Stock Brokers

Indian markets opened on a positive note on Monday despite mixed cues from it Asian market peers where Chinese shares traded lower post better than expected consumer spend data.

During the afternoon session markets lost initial gains and traded marginally in green with buying in Healthcare, IT, and TECK stocks. Positive sentiments were getting support with Commerce and Industry Minister’s statement that the proposed free trade agreements (FTAs) with countries, including Australia, the UK and the UAE, are moving at a fast pace and these pacts, when implemented, would help provide greater market access to domestic goods.

However, upside remain capped as WPI inflation in October surged to 12.54% from 10.66% a month ago and 1.31% in October 2020. The high rate of inflation in October 2021 is primarily due to rise in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, food products, crude petroleum & natural gas, chemicals and chemical products etc as compared the corresponding month of the previous year.

Shell to drop the ‘Dutch’ from name, end dual share structure

Royal Dutch Shell Plc plans to simplify its structure, establishing a single line of shares and moving its tax residence to the U.K. from the Netherlands.

While such a change had been on the cards for years, the decision comes at a time when relations in its home country have become increasingly fraught. Without warning, Dutch pension fund ABP said last month it would drop Shell -- and all fossil fuels -- from its portfolio, while in May a court ruled the firm must slash its emissions harder and faster than planned.

OPEC+ will probably stick with oil-production strategy, says UAE: Bloomberg

The OPEC+ group of major oil producers is likely to stick with its plan of raising daily output by 400,000 barrels per month, according to the United Arab Emirates.

The comments from UAE Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei echoed those of his counterpart from Oman and suggest that at least some members of the 23-nation alliance are will to continue resisting U.S. pressure to pump faster.

“The 400,000 is continuing and that should be enough," Mazrouei said in an interview in Abu Dhabi, where he’s attending the Adipec oil and gas conference. He spoke after being on a panel with the energy ministers of Saudi Arabia and India.

YES Securities recommends SELL on Apollo Hospitals

Hospitals shine but pricing elevated

Management indicated it expects ARPOB to sustain even as sensitivity to change in ARPOB is quite meaningful. Factoring such elevated ARPOB would imply assuming case mix remains similar to what it has been during the pandemic. We refrain from making such an overarching change in ARPOB as revival in footfalls would tend to reduce the share of high end surgeries. Given the sharp rise in ARPOB, raise realization estimates resulting in ~40% rise in FY22 EPS. On near term strength in ARPOB, raise EV/EBIDTA multiple for hospitals to 13x but retain SELL with revised target price of 3,030 apiece.

Somany Ceramics stock up 4.5% on robust Q2 performance

Tile maker Somany Ceramics Ltd has impressed the Street with its robust performance in the September quarter. Its revenue and profit growth of 10% and 57% year-on-year basis, was ahead of analysts' expectations. This beat was largely driven by operating leverage. Another postive takeaway for investors in this stock was tile volume growth of 25% compared to the same quarter last year. On a two-year CAGR basis, Somany's tile volume growth at around 13% was similar to that of close competitor Kajaria Ceramics Ltd, analysts said.

ICICI Securities maintains BUY on Coal India; target price at ₹234 apiece

Coal India’s reported a net profit of Q2FY22 of 29.3bn, down 0.6% YoY. However, adjusted PAT at 32.3bn was 9.4% YoY higher due to a one-time charge of 4bn (pre-tax) on actuarial valuation of higher medical benefits to retired employees (increased from 0.5mn to 0.8mn per retiree for 0.21mn retirees), as recommended by the CAG ( 6bn in Q1FY22).

Further, higher diesel and explosive costs, higher depreciation and lower other income were other major reasons offsetting the higher volumes. These factors we believe may compel Coal India to undertake price hikes in the next few months.

Revenues were robust at 233bn, up 10.1% YoY, on 9.4% YoY growth in offtake volumes to 147 million tonne. Average realisation was flat at Rs1,448/tonne though e-auction realisations improved 10.9% YoY. E-auction volumes also increased 20.8% YoY. Since e-auctions with higher premiums started only on 20th Aug’21, billing for the same started from 4th Oct’21 onwards.

We therefore expect higher realisation and volumes to be reflected in Q3FY22. Maintain BUY.

Info Edge reports massive surge in Q2 PAT on Zomato listing

Info Edge (India) Ltd, parent of and, reported an over 47-fold jump in its net profit for the quarter ended September on the back of exceptional gains following the blockbuster listing of online food delivery giant Zomato.

The Noida-based company's net profit surged to 7369.34 crore during July-September from 155.33 crore in year-ago period, Info Edge said in a filing to the exchanges.

October WPI Inflation at 12.54%

India’s wholesale price inflation galloped to a five-month high at 12.54% in October, breaking the five-month downward trend as prices of manufactured items and fuel group shot up.

In September, inflation based on the wholesale price index (WPI) was at 10.66%.

Data released by the industry department showed fuel inflation accelerated to 37.2% in October from 24.8% in the preceding month while inflation for manufactured items rose to 12% from 11.4% during the same period. Food inflation, however, contracted 1.7% during October as vegetable prices eased from their level a year ago.

While high petrol, diesel and cooking gas prices drove fuel inflation, high prices of basic metals, textiles, plastics and edible oils drove inflation of manufactured items.

Retail inflation marginally picked up to 4.48% in October due to higher-than-expected fuel and food inflation.

Fitch Solutions last week cautioned that despite one of the strongest growth outlooks across the emerging markets, policymakers in India are facing rising inflationary pressures, which will start to pose policy challenges.

Since last month tourists on chartered flights were already being granted entry and Indian authorities expanded that to arrivals on commercial flights on Monday.

Derivatives Strategy - Positional Options: ICICI Direct

The volatility in stocks is significantly higher even when the Nifty has been trading in a range. This provides a risky but rewarding opportunity to write stock options to gain from gradual erosion. Writing option provides added advantage as almost 80% option expires worthless on the expiry.

The Theta of the options erodes exponentially with time. We believe that the second half of the series is apt for stock option writings.

For selecting stocks, apart from considering the option bases of the series, we also look at the ongoing trend in the futures segment along with delivery volumes.

We advise to write the below stock options for the ongoing series, which are likely to expire worthless:

1) Bharti Airtel November Put

2) Larsen & Toubro November Put

3) Bajaj Finance November Call

4) IndusInd Bank November Call

Technical Outlook

The formation of higher peak and trough on the monthly chart signifies broader positive structure is intact that makes us believe that the index would eventually resolve higher and retest the all-time high of 18,600 by December 2021. Key point to highlight over past 18 months is that, price-wise Nifty has maintained the rhythm of not correcting for more than 7-9% while sustaining above 50 days EMA and time-wise intermediate corrections have got arrested within four weeks. As index has already corrected 5.5% over past three weeks, we expect index to hold 17,500 and eventually challenge the life highs

Dollar near 16-month high, market awaits clues on Fed policy

The dollar eased back from near an almost 16-month high versus major peers on Monday, as traders awaited fresh clues on the U.S. economy after bringing forward bets last week for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike on the back of red-hot inflation.

The dollar index, which measures the currency against six peers, eased 0.13% to 95.012 from Friday, when it posted its biggest weekly gain since mid-August and touched 95.266 for the first time since July 2020.

The dollar had been on a tear since Wednesday, when data showed a broad-based rise in U.S. consumer prices last month at the fastest annual pace since 1990, casting doubts on the Fed's stance that price pressure will be transitory.

Japan's economy shrinks more than expected as supply shortages hit

Japan's economy contracted much faster than expected in the third quarter as global supply disruptions hit exports and business spending plans and fresh COVID-19 cases soured the consumer mood.

While many analysts expect the world's third-largest economy to rebound in the current quarter as virus curbs ease, worsening global production bottlenecks pose increasing risks to export-reliant Japan.

The economy shrank an annualised 3.0% in July-September after a revised 1.5% gain in the first quarter, preliminary gross domestic product (GDP) data showed on Monday, much worse than a median market forecast for a 0.8% contraction.

Asia shares edge higher as China data beat forecasts

Asian shares edged higher on Monday as Chinese economic data surprised on the high side, challenging wagers the economy was stuck in a downturn although a decline in mainland house prices was a worry.

Annual growth in retail sales and industrial output both handily beat forecasts, with the bounce in consumption a positive given pandemic restrictions.

On a negative note for the stressed housing market new home prices in China fell 0.2% month-on-month in October, the biggest decline since February 2015.

Chinese blue chips were steady on the data, while MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.4%, after popping higher late last week.

Japan's Nikkei gained 0.5% as data showing economic activity shrank by more than expected in the third quarter only reinforced the case for aggressive fiscal stimulus.

India factory output slips, retail inflation jumps

India’s factory output growth slowed to 3.1% in September, and retail inflation picked up marginally to 4.48% in October, compounding the dilemma for policymakers.

Data issued by the statistics office on Friday showed that the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) decelerated in September, from 11.9% in August and 1% in September last year. This was mainly due to the unfavourable base, disruptions from heavy monsoon and the impact of semiconductor chip shortages on automobile production, outweighing a pre-festive season inventory buildup suggested by goods and services tax (GST) e-way bill data.

Sequentially, India’s IIP contracted for the second straight month in September by 2.6%, signalling demand revival remains tentative. (Read here)

Market view: Sameet Chavan, Chief Analyst-Technical and Derivatives, Angel One

Market seems to be trapped in a range. So it looks like a consolidation in the range of 17800-18100.

For this week, 18200-18350 is to be seen as a crucial range and till the time we do not surpass it convincingly, we will not be out of the woods. In fact, it would be too early to comment on it, but we can clearly see a bearish formation of ‘Head and Shoulder’ being in process on the daily chart of Nifty. The neckline support is around 17700-17600, which if gets broken, we could see difficult days for market in the short run. With reference to our recent cautious stance on the market, we will not be surprised to see it happening soon, if we fail to go beyond the mentioned zone of 18200-18350 this week.

The main reason for us to continue with the cautious stance is the formation of ‘Shooting Star’ pattern on monthly chart. As long as we do not break the high of the candle, it can prove its significance anytime. Hence, we reiterate on avoiding aggressive longs and even if one wants to follow stock specific moves, needs to be very selective.

Asian shares cautiously higher; China data in focus

Asian equities edged cautiously higher on Monday as U.S. stock futures made early gains, though investors were wary of bearish surprises in a batch of Chinese economic data due out later.

Annual growth in retail sales, industrial output and urban investment are all expected to slow further in October partly due to pandemic restrictions and strains in the housing market.

Elsewhere, the U.N. climate conference in Scotland did manage to hammer out a deal on emissions, but only by watering down a commitment to phase out coal.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.1%, after popping higher late last week.
