Global markets update: US stocks end mixed ahead of debt ceiling talks

S&P 500 gains less than 0.1%, Dow Jones Industrial Average falls 0.4%, Nasdaq composite rises 0.5%

US stocks ended mixed on Monday ahead of debt ceiling negotiations. Talks between White House and Republican leaders were expected to resume Monday night.

The S&P 500 gained less than 0.1% at 4,192.63. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 140.05 points, or 0.4%, at 33,286.58. The Nasdaq composite rose 62.88, or 0.5%, at 12,720.78.

Among regional banks, Comerica climbed 3.5%, KeyCorp 4.6% and Western Alliance Bancorporation jumped 10.3%. 

Chevron shares fell 1.8% after announcing it will acquire PDC Energy for $6.3 billion. PDC gained 7.2%.

JetBlue dropped 2.1% and American Airlines lost 3% after a federal court verdict on Friday said that the companies' alliance for service in the Northeastern region must end due to competition concerns.

Meta Platforms gained 1.1% after it called European regulators’ decision to impose a record $1.3 billion privacy fine “flawed” and “unjustified”. Meta said it would appeal against the decision.

The yield  on 10-year treasury rose to 3.71% from 3.68% late Friday. The 2-year treasury yield rose to 4.32% from 4.28%.

Currencies

The US dollar rose to 138.56 Japanese yen from 138.10. The euro rose to $1.0819 from $1.0808.

Europe

European stocks closed mixed on Monday, with the pan-European STOXX 600 index largely unchanged at the close.

Britain’s FTSE 100 gained 0.2% at 7,770.99. Germany’s DAX fell 0.3% at 16,223.99. France’s CAC 40 lost 0.2% at 7,478.16.

Asia

Most markets in Asia closed higher on Monday.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index climbed 1.2% at 19,678.17. China’s Shanghai Composite added 0.4% at 3,296.47.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.9% at 31,086.82.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index ended 0.2% lower at 7,263.3. New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index fell about 0.9% at 11,993 points.

Markets in South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia and Thailand were also up.

Energy prices

Brent crude for July delivery rose 41 cents to $75.99 a barrel on Monday. US crude oil benchmark for June delivery rose 44 cents to $71.99 a barrel.

Natural gas for June delivery fell 19 cents to $2.40 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Bullion

Gold for June delivery fell $4.40 to $1,977.20 an ounce. Silver for July delivery fell 20 cents to $23.86 an ounce.
