Over the last few quarters, metal stocks are in the limelight as prices on the LME continue their rally. The Hindustan Copper stock itself has given solid returns of 133% over the last three years.
In this editorial, we examine some of the pros and cons of investing in the stock.
About Hindustan Copper
Hindustan Copper is a public sector enterprise under the mines ministry.
It was incorporated on 9 November 1967 and is the country's only vertically integrated copper producer, carrying out the entire value chain—from copper ore mining and beneficiation to smelting, refining, and the production of refined copper products.
Pros of Investing in Hindustan Copper
#1 Low Per Capita Consumption in India
As shown in the chart above, India’s per capita copper consumption is just 0.6 kg, compared with the world average of 3.2 kg. Hindustan Copper, being the only copper miner in India, has tremendous growth potential as consumption has remained low.
#2 Strong copper demand outlook
Copper is expected to benefit from the global shift towards electrification. Rising investments in renewable energy, power transmission, electric vehicles, batteries, electronics, and data centers are increasing copper requirements because of its excellent conductivity.
#3 Solid Expansion Plans
Management reiterated its production expansion plans to capitalise on India's growing copper demand.
The company plans to invest ₹7189 crore over 5 years to expand domestic mining operations and processing infrastructure. The target is to increase total copper ore production capacity from 4.21 MTPA to 12.20 MTPA by FY30/31.
#4 Robust Financial Performance
Hindustan Copper reported solid numbers for Q1 FY27. Revenue was up 82% YoY at ₹937 crore. The company's net profit was ₹353 crore, up 63% YoY. The EBITDA was up 173% at ₹471 crore.
The exceptional performance was driven by higher global copper prices, stronger ore production, better realisations and improved operating efficiency, resulting in a sharp expansion in margins and record quarterly profitability.
Cons of Investing in Hindustan Copper
#1 High dependence on copper prices
Earnings can be volatile because profitability is closely linked to global copper prices. A sustained correction in copper could hurt margins and profits.
#2 Execution risk in expansion
Hindustan Copper plans to increase mining capacity substantially, but delays in mine development or commissioning can postpone the expected production growth.
#3 Commodity-cycle risk
Copper is a cyclical commodity. Global growth slowing, weaker Chinese demand or rising inventories could put pressure on copper prices.
#4 High capex requirements
Expanding mining capacity from around 4 MTPA to 12 MTPA by FY31 requires significant investment. Poor execution or cost overruns could reduce returns on the expansion.
Conclusion
Hindustan Copper’s outlook is linked to the long-term growth in copper demand from electrification, renewable energy, power infrastructure and other industrial applications.
The company is also pursuing significant capacity expansion, which could support higher production over the coming years.
However, its performance remains exposed to copper-price cycles, mining execution and the substantial capital required for expansion.
Overall, the company’s future performance will depend on copper prices, production growth, capacity expansion and its ability to execute planned projects efficiently.
Investors should evaluate the company's fundamentals, corporate governance, and valuations of the stock as key factors when conducting due diligence before making investment decisions.
