Outflows from domestic stock markets and a broad strengthening of the US dollar weighed on the rupee
Weak GDP data weighed on Indian assets, including the rupee today
The Indian rupee (INR) today fell sharply against the US dollar (USD) today to slide past the 72-a-dollar mark again. Weak GDP data and a broad strengthening of the US dollar weighed on the Indian rupee. Further, a sharp fall in domestic stock market also put pressure on the rupee. The Sensex fell about 800 points - its biggest fall of this year. Opening at 71.97 a dollar, the rupee fell to 72.41 at the day’s low. It closed near day's low at 72.39 a dollar - its lowest in 10 months - as compared to the previous close of 71.40. The rupee’s weakness, however, sent gold and silver prices higher in domestic markets today.
