Sensex gains for second consecutive day, up 147 points, Nifty tops 12,305

BSE Sensex rose 0.36% or 147.37 points to close at 41599.72 points
  • Infosys, Maruti Suzuki, UltraTech Cement, Kotak Mahindra, Asian Paints, Mahindra & Mahindra and HUL gained more than 1% were the top gainers in the Sensex pack

    India's benchmark indices gained for the second consecutive day on Friday on reports that US President Donald Trump could sign the Phase-1 of trade deal next week.

    BSE Sensex rose 0.36% or 147.37 points to close at 41599.72 points while Nifty gained 0.33% or 40.90 points to hit a fresh all time high of 12305.35 points.

    Infosys, Maruti Suzuki, UltraTech Cement, Kotak Mahindra, Asian Paints, Mahindra & Mahindra and HUL gained more than 1% were the top gainers in the Sensex pack. On the other hand, ICICI Bank, InudsInd Bank and Axis Bank all fell close to 1% were the top laggards.

    Asian Markets were closed mixed. Japan's Nikkei225 index gained 0.47%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 0.27% and China's Shanghai Composite lost 0.08%.

    BSE Midcap and BSE Smallcap index gained 0.40% and 0.42% respectively. The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, shares 1,422 rose and 1131 shares fell. A total of 174 shares were unchanged. In Nifty 50 index, 31 stocks advanced while 19 stocks declined.

    Among Sectoral indices, BSE Reatly was the biggest gainer with 1.86% followed by BSE Metal gaining 1.20% and BSE FMCG index gaining 0.86%. However, BSE Telecom lost 0.61%.

    Earnings season would kick start from today with Infosys declaring its Q3 results. Analyst expect this quarter to be muted, largely led by BFSI, Auto and Consumer. Infosys Ltd gained 1.47% ahead of its earnings.

    Shares of Tata Group companies advanced after the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday stayed NCLAT order reinstating Cyrus Mistry as executive chairman of Tata Sons. Tata Global Beverages gained 3.90%, Tata Motors up 2.27%,Tata Power up 1.99% and Tata Steel up 0.73%.

    Yes Bank fell 5.29% to close at 44.80 after Uttam Prakash Agarwal's resignation likely due to corporate governance issue. He was independent director and chairman of YES Bank's audit committee.

    Shares of KNR Constructions soared 9.39% to close at 278.45 after the company announced of selling its entire equity stake in a toll road BOT asset of special purpose vehicle (SPV) viz KNR Walayar Tollways Private Limited (KWTPL) to Singapore-based Cube Highways

    Sterlite Technologies Ltd gained as much as 4% to 129.80 after the company said its arm bought 13% stake in Israel based ASOCS.

    Shares of GTPL Hathway zoomed as much as 11% to 90 after the digital cable television and broadband services provider posted a 77 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth in consoldiated net profit at 32.9 crore in December quarter.
