Riding on the back of robust bullish sentiment, Sensex and Nifty 50 neared their lifetime high levels on Monday. Consumer durables stocks witnessed the most buying, while substantial gains were also seen in auto and banking stocks. Oil and gas stocks, however, emerged as top underperformers.
PremiumIndian markets kicked started this week's trading session with a strong rally on Monday with Sensex and Nifty 50 coming close to their historic highs. The sentiment turned bullish on the back of positive global cues and robust GDP growth prediction. Sensex crossed the 63,000 level and Nifty 50 also zoomed to over 18,640 mark during the day.
Sensex closed at 62,846.38, surging by 344.69 points or 0.55%. While Nifty 50 jumped by 99.30 points or 0.54% to close at 18,598.65.
The 30-scrip benchmark has touched an intraday high of 63,026, and the 50-scrip benchmark clocked the day's high of 18,641.20.
Consumer durables stocks outperformed today, followed by auto, banking, and metal stocks. However, oil & gas stocks were among the laggards.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services said, "The domestic benchmarks experienced a strong rally and came close to its life-time highs, primarily driven by positive global cues and robust predictions of domestic economic growth."

Nair added, "An in-principle approval from US leaders for raising the US debt ceiling has generated optimism among global investors, who are now anticipating the next monetary plan of the Fed and economic data points. Meanwhile, the US PCE inflation rate that came in higher than anticipated raised the prospect of another rate hike by the Fed in its June meeting."
On May 29th session, about 1,971 stocks advanced, while 1,659 stocks declined and 181 stocks were unchanged. A total of 181 stocks hit a new 52-week high, while 61 stocks struck their fresh 52-week lows.

Top gainers: DB Realty (+11.05%), Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar (+10.93%), ICICI General Insurance (+8.19%), Mahindra Lifespace Developers (+7.89%), and Bengal & Assam Company (+7.29%).
Top losers: Greaves Cotton (-10.34%), GMR Infra (-10.08%), City Union Bank (-9.83%), Balkrishna Industries (-7.67%), Elecon Engineering (-7.26%).
