An Italian romcom, a 26/11 drama, rare experimental shorts by David Lynch—here are our eclectic weekend viewing suggestions
The Morning Show (Apple TV+)
The Apple TV+ drama starring Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell is back with its second season. The first season was praised for tackling the issue of sexual harassment at the workplace. Lounge wrote about the new season: “What The Morning Show seems to be saying is that the only way forward for those who have been cancelled is sympathy—no matter how it is earned. A character who appears to deserve flaming torches comes down with the coronavirus, spinning that into yet another new lease of career. This is believable yet insensitive, much like news-anchors on this show who alarmingly forsake masks as they run around homeless shelters in New York. The Morning Show is all too eager to rip masks off, even if it may injure more than it reveals.”
Mumbai Diaries (Amazon Prime Video)
The hospital-set first season of Mumbai Diaries unfolds against the backdrop of the attacks on the city in November 2008. This Amazon Prime Video series follows healthcare professionals as they try and deal with the onslaught of patients—including those wounded in the attacks and the attackers themselves. The series is directed by Nikkhil Advani and stars Mohit Raina, Konkona Sen Sharma and Prakash Belawadi.
Out Of My League (Netflix)
In this Italian romcom, Marta (Ludovica Francesconi) is orphaned at a young age. Her parents leave her an apartment and pass on a rare genetic disorder, one where her lungs fill up with mucus. She lives with her two best friends, the fashionista Jacopo (Jozef Gjura)—he will remind you of a young Rupert Everette—and the red-haired Federica (Gaja Masciale). Marta's life is short and she is looking for love. One day she spots the handsome and rich Arturo (Giuseppe Maggio) and starts stalking him. He's out of her league, but as most romcoms go, it follows the predictable path. The film is plain vanilla interperesed with some chocolate chip moments. At one and a half hours, it will be over before your popcorn is. An yes, Marta's bob is very reminiscent of Amélie.
David Lynch: A Surrealist Mastermind (MUBI)
Despite the popular success of Twin Peaks and his newfound status as a social media darling, David Lynch has always been an experimental director. A bonanza on MUBI is a reminder, serving up not only his first feature, the gloriously strange Eraserhead, but also the short films Boat, The Grandmother, Bug Crawls and Dumbland. Expect creepy trick effects, grinding scores and filmic provocations of all sorts.
Searching (Netflix)
The 2018 film is unique for taking place entirely on computer and mobile screens. It’s about a father looking for his missing teenage daughter with the help of a police detective. Aneesh Chaganty directs John Cho (the Star Trek and Harold and Kumar movies) and Debra Messing (Will & Grace) in this sleeper hit.
