Elvis Presley, who was one of the most successful musicians of 20th century, chose to serve as a regular soldier in the army for two years instead of being in Special Services

One of the most famous musicians of the 20th century, Elvis Presley began his career at the age of 19. His first RCA Records single, Heartbreak Hotel, was released in January 1956 and became a No.1 hit in the US. The same year in November, Presley made his film debut in Love Me Tender. He won three Grammys, as well as the Grammy lifetime achievement award at 36.

However, what a lot of people may not know about The King is that on 24 March 1958 Presley was drafted into the Army. Against expectations, Presley elected to serve as a regular soldier and not in Special Services where he would just primarily perform for the troops. Between his induction and discharge, Presley had 10 top 40 hits, including Wear My Ring Around Your Neck, the best-selling Hard Headed Woman, and A Big Hunk O’ Love.
