All the stars are closer

  • Indian jewellers are once again set to see their designs on Hollywood stars at this year’s Oscars’ red carpet
  • Oscars gives us an opportunity to showcase our design and craftsmanship prowess on a global platform, says designer

Come 24 February, this year’s Academy Award nominees will not be the only shining stars on the red carpet. Forevermark, which has made it an annual tradition to dress actors and celebrities in their Red Carpet collection, tied up with 27 Indian jewellers to create jewels that have been on display in Los Angeles for private viewings and selection by celebrity stylists. Among the roster of brandsare Rose, Kirtilals, Orra, C. Krishnaiah Chetty & Sons and Mahesh Notandas.

For many Indian jewellers, their association with the Red Carpet collection goes back many seasons. Narayan Jewellers, headquartered in Vadodara, has been part of the collaboration for seven years. The brand also collaborated with designer Bibhu Mohapatra for his show at the New York Fashion Week earlier in February. For the Academy Awards, they have crafted four jewels, including a diamond glove. “Jewellery is not just about traditional categories," says Ketan Chokshi, director of the brand. “The glove was an interesting category, and we wanted it to be flexible and flowing. It was the technique that determined the design."

Such associations are a means of not only showcasing Indian technical expertise but also seeing home-grown brands among the world’s most celebrated couture brands and designers. Anmol Jewellers, a Mumbai-based retailer which has created a diamond cuff for the collection inspired by the symmetry and aesthetics of traditional Persian architecture, is another regular collaborator with Forevermark. “The Oscars (red carpet) is an iconic platform," says Ishu Datwani, founder of the brand. “(This collaboration) gives us an opportunity to showcase our design and craftsmanship prowess and latest design trends on a global platform."
