Here's what has our attention this weekend

Snapchat with Fashion designer Nachiket Barve

The fashion designer on making menswear and must-haves for a smart wardrobe.

How did you make a turn towards menswear?

I primarily made womenswear, but when I wanted something (for myself), I couldn’t find anything that suited my taste. I started sampling and experimenting on myself. And every time I stepped out in my clothes, people wanted to know where I got it... The idea came from people who wanted these clothes.

What inspires the collection?

All my collections have a story. In this collection, the Swirling Swallows bandi is inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds—the swallows are done using threadwork. The insects are inspired by Ambrosius Bosschaert’s still-life paintings. The felt appliqué is inspired by armour and the textures have been developed over years. These clothes have something that appeal to my mind, my eye, my aesthetic—it elevates my experience of being.

What is one failsafe look for men?

A pair of beautiful tan loafers, a well-cut pair of blue jeans, a tailored white shirt and a textured Indian bandi is a great look for a relaxed brunch or a sundowner or even the Kalahari Desert.

Three things every man needs in his closet.

For Indianwear, you must have a kurta-pyjama, bandi and footwear that doesn’t look like an afterthought. Among Westerns, you must have a pair of denims, a white or black shirt and a well-cut suit. I will throw in a fourth, which is a pair of great sunglasses.—SD

In his forthcoming solo exhibition, Karim is set to do that again with his series that cuts across art, design and architecture. The show, titled NU DE Models, lays bare the process behind the pieces and encourages new forms of interactions with them, such as a carpet that cascades into a chair.—BF
