“It’s impossible to ignore the times we are living in when designing a collection now," says designer Payal Singhal. Her new collection, Kismet, which will be presented in a hybrid format (online plus offline) at the ongoing FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week on 20 March, reflects the belief.
By combining the unique aesthetics of loungewear, street wear and Indian wear, Singhal has given her signature bohemian occasion wear a laidback treatment. As a result, the clothes, including kurta-jogger sets, bomber and co-ord sets, dhoti saris, ribbed crop top-jogger saris and balloon lehengas with crop tops and dupattas, are more versatile and can be worn anywhere, from resort holidays to summer evenings.
For the collection, the designer has collaborated with R-Elan, an umbrella brand from the house of Reliance Industries Ltd that offers a range of new-age fabrics, creating clothes using their high-performance, eco-friendly fabrics, including fluid FreeFlow BSY, luscious SuperFeel filament yarn and GreenGold made from used PET bottles.
"We’ve spent the past year in kaftans and loungewear, they have become wardrobe MVPs (most valuable players). Comfort being the key, it was wonderful to embellish and work on a range of techniques with the R-Elan eco-friendly and free flow fabrics," says Singhal. "The next wave of clothing is all about minimal maximalism, which means that even when dressed to the nines, there will be a need for ease in silhouettes and fabrics. This collection is a unique take on Indian wear merged with loungewear that I’ve never done before. It is also heavily inspired by how I dress. I don’t have separate Indian and western wear wardrobes. My personal style is all about making transitional pieces work."
Commenting on the collaboration, Gunjan Sharma, chief marketing officer (polyester business), Reliance Industries, said, “R-Elan fabrics are conceptualized and designed to enhance performance, comfort, aesthetics, and it certainly brings out the sustainability quotient."
