Heat and make-up don’t always get along well. Different cream and oil-based ingredients in products mean that when they come in contact with sweat, they slip and slide, especially if you are wearing a thick layer, which doesn’t cling as easily to the skin as when you have fewer products on. Powder products, on the other hand, can run down your face with sweat, so it’s a fine line.
We asked five celebrity make-up artists to share their ride-or-die sweat-proof make-up favourites so you know just what you need, besides good lighting, of course, when you get ready for your next Zoom call amid rising temperatures.
Adrian Jacobs
“The more you cake up, the higher the chances of your make-up melting. Use less foundation and go for a foundation that gives you 60-70% coverage instead of a full coverage one. Ditch your compact as it will react to the heat and sweat. The same goes for loose powder—use too much and it will run down. You need products that will sink into your skin rather than sitting on top,” says Jacobs.
Eyes: Mascara by Mavala or L’Oréal, Faces kohl gel eyeliner. “I have used these products on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for Fanney Khan (2018) and it stayed through a rain sequence. Also, oily skin and AC environment mean that you can’t do much with your brows as applying powder will make it run. The only product that works for me is Gimme Brow by Benefit, which comes with a mascara wand for easy application.”
Face: Foundation by Kryolan; Dermacol concealer; primers from Smashbox; Armani Luminous foundation; loose powders in different shades from Bobbi Brown.
Eyes: Pigments from Morphe (Jacobs also swears by their brushes).
Cheeks: Cha Cha Tint from Benefit.
Lips: Benetint by Benefit or a cream long-lasting lipstick; lip balms and masks from Laneige.
Vibha Gusain
Face: Primer by M.A.C Prep + Prime; Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation or Bobbi Brown Skin Long-Wear Foundation; Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer; Makeup Forever Ultra HD pressed powder.
Eyes: “I like to prime the eyes with a concealer first instead of a primer. The eyeshadows by Pat McGrath Labs are the best. They are extremely long-lasting, they do not crease and stay on for very long,” says Gusain. For eye pencils and eyeliner, she prefers Kay Beauty by Katrina Kaif. Gusain’s drug-store favourite mascara is Maybelline New York’s Volume Express Colossal Mascara, or Better Than Sex by Too Faced.
Cheeks: Tints by Benefit and Makeup Forever cream blushes.
Lips: Dior Addict Lip Tattoo; Benefit lip and cheek tint; Bobbi Brown lip tints.
Florian Hurel
“Summer is when you let your skin breathe. You need products that feel like a second skin and the less you use the better. This is what will make your make-up last longer,” says Hurel.
Face: Luminous water-based foundation by Chanel. Hurel adds that though it isn’t the best if you are looking for full coverage, it works well if you are going for a dewy, natural skin look. At times, he also likes to use the concealer stick by Makeup Forever because the thicker texture gives good coverage.
If you need to attend an online event, the matte setting and finishing powder by M.A.C works well. Or pick the Banana Powder by Makeup Forever for daily use.
Eyes: The cream eyeshadows by Tom Ford have long-lasting pigments that are really good for the Indian skin tone. “I like using the Lakmé pencil for eyeliner as it’s easy to work it out and smudge it and it lasts well too. The Benefit mascara is great; however, I always like mixing two mascaras with different brushes, one for volume with a thinner brush and one to fan out the length with a big brush. The Bobbi Brown mascara is great too for length and it’s long-lasting,” he says. In addition to a pencil, Hurel uses the Tom Ford liquid liner as a finisher because he thinks it stays the longest.
Lips: “Estée Lauder is my favourite for lips. They have fab nudes and the texture is comforting and creamy,” says Hurel.
Blush: Liquid tints by Benefit or cream blushes by Bobbi Brown.
Bhavya Arora
“In summers, I go by the adage less is more. When the weather isn’t ideal, then you have to work smart. If I know someone sweats more, then I will try a dewy look with creamy products instead of powders so that there’s less chance of the products getting patchy on the skin. Icing the skin and/or using aloe vera gel before make-up is one hack that works for me. Replace your hydration routine with products like Farsáli oil that will hydrate the skin but aren’t oily or sticky. Also, primer truly is your best friend in summers,” says Arora.
Face: Smashbox Photo Finish HD primer; Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation; Bobbi Brown Full Cover Concealers; Smashbox pressed powder and Laura Mercier loose powder.
Eyes: “I normally use my concealers and powder it and use it as a primer for the eyes. Most eyeshadows stay if you prime the lids well. I use Huda Beauty, Stila and Dior palettes,” says Arora. For pencils, Arora uses Rock ‘N’ Kohl Eyeliner from Charlotte Tilbury or Maybelline kajal pencil. To finish, try the Diorshow On Stage Liner or any one by Tom Ford, and Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara.
Lips: Maybelline Superstay Matte, Dior Addict Lip Tattoo.
Cheeks: Benetint from Benefit.
Arti Nayar
“My rules to make make-up last long in summer are a good prep and prime routine that gets the skin ready for the make-up and setting the make-up with loose powder with a puff and a setting spray at the end,” says Nayar.
Face: Primers by Smashbox; Under (cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer by Marc Jacobs; Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream; and Guerlain’s 24k gold primer is a great serum to prep and prime the skin. She also uses the under-eye cream by Bobbi Brown to nourish the skin before make-up. For foundations, Nayar uses Dior Forever Skin Glow foundation, Clinique’s Even Better Glow or Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter.
Eyes: Waterproof mascara by Maybelline; Smashbox or Charlotte Tilbury’s black kajal; Viseart matte eyeshadow palettes and cream eyeshadows by Charlotte Tilbury or Tom Ford.
